Foreign Draftees

April 24, 2014 at 09:44PM View BBCode

We have added a small wrinkle to the Amateur Draftee code.

4 players in the draft class will be older, major league aged players (aged 25 to 32). Three of these players will be Japanese, one will be Cuban.

We feel that this will add a little spice to the draft. A playoff team may decide to go with a 30 year old Japanese relief pitcher in the first round rather than a 17 year old C/C starter. Or a team that is rebuilding that doesn't have room in the minors may decide to draft a 26 year old Cuban outfielder.

Like any draftees, these players may be good, bad, or ugly.

A couple notes on the mechanics. To avoid talent inflation, we create the normal draft class then randomly select 4 players to delete and replace with these older players. The players skills will be dependent on your league skill level - so if your league rules tend to produce better than average players, these players will also be better than average. We used a database of Japanese Nippon League players and Cuban National Series to create the names, and tried our best to match the player avatars to the race.

You will notice this the next time your league has an draft class created.

Regular leagues will have 3 Japanese draftees and 1 Cuban draftee. 24 team leagues will have 4 Japanese players and 2 Cubans.

This will be turned on by default for all leagues, but Speed leagues can choose to turn it off or adjust how many foreign players are created by a simple majority vote.

I have recreated the draft class for Another Salary League to test this.

This is an interesting addition, however based on the four players added to the ASL I can't see anyone drafting any of this foreign talent anywhere near the 1st round. In fact I would be surprised to see any of these four ever making it off the waiver wire.

In the salary leagues, will owners have to pay a percentage of the Cuban player's earnings to the drug cartel that smuggled him to Mexico?

the only exception I can see, is that these players should be good. they would not be in the real life draft if not. would they? so they should just be created good, IMO.

I completely agree, they should at least be guys who will start from day one .

I'm just jazzed SimD has acknowledged that global players are now a part of MLB. The draft tweaks will come, I'm sure, especially with knowledgeable and experienced Simmers such as yourselves holding the Admins accountable.

This is a good thing!

Those are some awful players. I ran the code about 7 or 8 times while testing in the ASL. There were some A- players in some of them. I'm not concerned about the quality. I'd expect more than half the players to make a major league roster. This looks like a bad bunch, and I think the bad players on some of the unmanaged teams in the ASL are bringing the talent level down.

ah. it wasn't clear to me from your statements whether they supposed to be better than average players across the entire league or average players including the minor leagues. I am sure you know what to do. but, if you aren't using major leaguers as the comparison, I would suggest that. just leave the minor leaguers out of it. players this old are supposed to be coming out as major leaguers, or very close to it. so they should be better, in some degree, than the average major leaguer. of course, tanky players in the majors could drag this down too. but maybe not so much. in a salary league with cp? there would tend to be really bad minor leaguers other than the pointed up ones, because they make zip.

(all this is moot if you are using just major leaguers for the comparison anyway, of course.)

I look at players on a major or minor league roster that are between the ages of 25 and 32 to set the league talent level. I don't want to make the players too good as it may create too much talent inflation. On average, they will be better than fully developed versions of the draftees they are replacing because we're not looking at the waiver wire to set the league talent level, and over half of every draft class ends up on the waiver wire.

Yes, this strategy will create a bit of talent inflation but I think it will be offset by the fact that some of these players will have a limited number of years before they retire (the 30+ year olds).

It would be pretty cool to have those 4 or 8 foreign players to have blind skill grades, but yeah I love this idea. Would it be worth while to limit their option years?

not needed (the options limit). if someone wants to shuffle them between the majors and minors, so what? it would be meaningless.

I think the option years should be limited. Perhaps to keep it simple, they shouldn't have any options.

The 2TL average talent level is quite wacky at this point, but looking at the draft at least one of those guys will be a star, the others likely won't hit the waiver wire.

I like this idea, I have a habit of renaming players to at least have some players without such American sounding names.

Tyson, I picked up from the wire the recently drafted foreign player:

http://beta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9822001

He shows on his player card that he has 6 option years, but on the depth chart it says he is out of options, I think it might be an error...
