MLB is moving to a voting panel of 9 retired closers to choose who wins the best reliever award. maybe we could use this development to kill off that Rolaids formula and use one of our own.
although that'd jeopardize my prized donut in the FOY column of my owner card.

Given the nonsense surrounding the MVP formula and the practical impossibility of getting enough people in each league to vote on something like this, I'd greatly prefer status quo, personally.

Well that's good news on the real-life side of things. Maybe one day we'll see some stats that better show the skill of true closers.
In the game, my vote would be to make it as important on your owner card as golden gloves. The manager preferences don't really give a good way to have a closer. I know more often than not set my preferences where there is no closer, and I gather I'm not alone.

it's pretty easy to set up a 'traditional' closer. you're right that many do not.

Generally it is, but some of the finer points can't be done.
For instance most managers will get their closer some playing time if say they've gone on a four game streak where he hasn't been needed. I know in the sim world it doesn't matter if a guy sits on the bench for a week, but still your closer is your best arm in the bullpen, so you want him getting a good number of innings.
There's also no Home/Away designation in the pitcher preferences. For instance, you want your closer to pitch the 8th in a tie game on the road, not at home.
There should also be a rule especially for closers, such as in the 8th inning with the tying run in scoring position and two outs, you should be able to get the closer in for a four out save.

i totally agree that there's no chance of changing anything, especially something like award formulas, its just somethin to chat about...this board should probably be retitled "Suggest Pipe Dreams".

I always ran my bullpens as a sort of 3 man hierarchy with no "closer" setting so traditionally 20 saves was a big total for any one reliever on my teams.
Rarely if ever won Fireman awards but usually had 2-3 All Star relievers.
