I quit(almost)

If anymore teams trade their precious #1 picks to Washington, I think that I may quit! This is getting ridiculous!

I was tempted this year but decided to take a stand. Glad to see I was the only one......!

1990-03-07 A trade has been completed between the Washington Beltways and the Cleveland cavaliers. The Cleveland cavaliers receive Fred Mercedes from the Washington Beltways for Draft Pick 1990 Round 1 CLE (Pablo Smith).

I'd like to add some context to this...

Cleveland was coming off a 65-win season in 1989. In 1990, thanks at least somewhat to the contributions of Mercedes who won 21 games, the Cavaliers jumped to 84 wins. They went on to win the 1993 World Series - and another in 1995 - with Mercedes pitching at a high level until he retired in 1998.

I gave him one of those picks. At least I got back an SP that won 16 games this year and was probably the difference in getting back to the playoffs.

As I said in the other thread. Nice job of trading. On balance I'd say he got a good bit more than he gave up. Big closet full of #1's and didn't deplete the team to do it. Beltways will still be contending for #1.

Having a big bag of 1st round picks bunched together can be both a gold mine and a nail in the coffin. You only have 20 CPs you can place on prospects. You can only place 4 or 5 CPs on 3 prospects at any time. You must have a minimum total of 4 CPs on both pitchers and positional players. If you amass more than 3-4 1st rounders in a single year, while having strong prospects in your minors already... you're going to end up wasting at least 1 if not 2 of those picks because you won't be able to coach those draftees as well as you should. Beyond this, you take more of a risk by shipping off prospects in CP trades... as more often than not, the team accepting the trade does not have as strong mentoring ratings as you do.

When you do this for multiple seasons in a row as Washington has, you take a serious risk of giving up strong talent for picks that will end up being little more than mediocre players. Sure, bdavids could also turn around and trade those picks for other players... or do as he's tried with me a couple of times and pick up 1st rounders years down the line for 1st rounders he's picked up... but there's no gaurantee that any such deals will come to fruition, nor that the talents he's gained back will be strong enoughto replace what he gave up in the first place.

All of this is a leson I've personally come to learn in a couple of other leagues where I've over-extended my CPs... and am now having to get quite ceative to develop some strong prospects to the best possible results.

While I will agree that the piling on of draft picks on his end is a bit ridiculous... it takes two to make a trade. Some of the deals he's received, I would not personally have accepted. That said, bdavids and I have exchanged a few 1st rounders back and forth over the years.

I will also give bdavids his 'props' for managing to setup deals to do acquire those picks while not harming his current roster's effectiveness. He's proven to be a risk taker with some of these moves. Sometimes those risks pay off quite nicely. Other times, not so much.

Bdavids took over his franchise at an interesting time, when the AL had four teams that were winning 90+ games a year, and at least one owner, willing to trade picks for players to get his team over the top.

BUT I think it best that we keep debates over general managing styles to a minimum, or at least high level theoretical. In TRL there have been hard feelings in the past over such comments, and I am in another league where several owners have left over the same issue.

Until one of us gets paid to run a team, I think we all must remember that this is a game we do for fun and distraction, and that, whether we win or lose, has zero impact on the reality of our lives.

Let's keep it competitive and fun!

Well said! I'm sorry if my comments offended anyone. Let's all have a good season and enjoy this fun pastime of ours.

Yeah I found this tread interesting as I was one who traded 1sts and did so in order to revamp, refresh my roster and thought I was getting called out. but Wash 1st pick surplus was around long before I got here.
