World Series at a Glance

September 09, 2013 at 02:10PM View BBCode

Toronto takes a commanding 2 games to 0 lead in the World Series. After winning game 1 easily enough 5-1 game 2 at least was more competitive. The big inning was the 8th inning with AZ ahead at the time 4-3. AZ started off the inning with 1 out and then had 2 singles and a walk, loading the bases up. Ray Collins then grounded out into a 3-6-3 double play. Toronto opened their inning up with a single and then a Ronald Curry HR. That was the last of the scoring and Toronto won 5-4. One team had the potential for a big inning and failed to get the big hit. The other got it and it was the game winner. AZ can only hope there is some home field magic at work as the series heads now to AZ for 3 games.

Things are looking bleak indeed in AZ. Can you say this game was a rout? Tom Smith 17-8 in the regular season, was lit up for 7 hits and 5 runs in the 1st inning. John Miller then came in and was not any better. In 2.1 innings he gave up 9 hits and 10 runs and the relievers that followed gave up 7 hits and 4 runs. So in 9 innings the AZ pitchers gave up 23 hits and 19 runs, 18 of them earned, while also walking 8. They did strikeout 9 Toronto batters that were so excited to be hitting AZ pitching they got too impatient and swung at bad pitches out of the strike zone.
Arizona when we won games during the season usually did it with good pitching and good contact hitting. We sure did not get either in this game. Our hitters got 4 hits and 1 walk. So after 3 games AZ is now hitting .232 in the WS (which is even worse than the .238 we hit during the Division playoff vs. NY) while Toronto is hitting .348 far better than .220 ave NY hit against us in the Division playoffs. Now down 3-0 in the World Series AZ needs their pitchers to step up and keep us in the game and for our bats to awaken too before it's too late. Credit Toronto for a dominating performance so far too.

Game 4 Barney Baylor pitched a 9 inning gem giving up only 6 hits, 1 run, while striking out 10. An AZ pitcher pitching well. This is what we needed all along. Our hitters did better too and got 10 hits and 3 walks while scoring 6 runs. AZ won 6-1.
Game 5 Our starter Jerry Koosman pitched a quality start this his 2nd time facing Toronto. In 7.2 innings he gave up 2 hits, 3 walks and 0 runs while striking out 8. Our offense was not nearly as robust as the previous game and only scored 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. The bad news our closer was not nearly so good. In 1.1 innings he gave up 3 hits, 2 runs and walked 1 making the game closer than we wanted. But we won 4-2 in another must win game.
Game 6 Jack DiLauro gave us 7.1 quality innings giving up 4 hits, 3 walks and 1 run. And the offense banged out 5 runs on 10 hits and 1 walk. 3 relievers came into the game after DiLauro and gave up 5 hits and a walk between them but only 1 run to preserve the win. Final 5-2

Win or lose in game 7, I am very proud of this team. They could have gave up down 3-0 in the series. But they have come back against a very good Toronto club and proven that AZ also deserves to be here too. The players have rebounded now to bring it down to 1 game. A game hopefully where everyone that has a ticket to it, will want to frame them after the game and look back many years from now and tell their grandchildren, I was there that day. Win or lose I hope it's a good one to go down not just into the baseball history books, but to be remembered as a game worthy to remember.

Wow! Congrats Rich. Brings back memories on the '04 Sox. And after getting blown out in game 3 19-1 (If memory serves me correct, the Sox lost game 3 in a blowout, 19-8).

Unbelievable. And my condolences to Toronto.

Game 7 was a rematch of Mike Adams vs. Tom Smith that met in game 3, when Toronto won 19-1. Mike in game 3 pitched a 9 inning complete game giving up only 1 run on 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 9. Tom lasted 1 inning in that game and gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and was pulled. So going into game 7 Tom was well rested. Mike Adams pitched well giving up only 2 runs for 7 innings and was only lifted in the 8th when the 1st two runners got on. Bill Slaughter got Toronto out of the inning so after 8 innings the score was still Arizona 2 Toronto 0. Tom Smith pitched the 1st 8 innings for Arizona and looked nothing like he did in game 3. He gave up 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 12, looking much more like the #1 starter that he was for his club during the regular season. In the top of the 9th Arizona got to Toronto's bullpen for 4 insurance runs and some of the Toronto fans headed for the exit, but not many. Toronto just got 1 walk in the 9th and lost the game 6-0 but the fan's stayed in the stadium for some time. Cheering for their team to come out for a curtain call. This is a team with a rich playoff history, with 17th WS appearances for Toronto, which has won 7 WS rings before. This is the 1st WS debut for Toronto under current ownership, who are to be congratulated on a great year!

Thanks for the congrats and my condolences to Toronto and congrats for a great year. After losing the first 3 games I was far from certain we could come back. I know it had to be somewhat of a heartbreaker to only need 1 win to put us away for good. Our pitching just got a lot better after game 3, and our hitting improved after game 3 too. We were still outscored in the series 34-27. It was almost like 2 series, with one team winning big for 3 games and the other for 4. After 3 games Toronto was hitting .348 and us .232 and when the series was over. the numbers for 7 games were Toronto .254 Arizona .272 (ABE thank you for some hits when I needed them the most.)

That's a Cracker Jack of a World Series at a Glance, Big Rich. Way to go putting together that team and managing the hell out of it.

Was fascinating to see former Chicago Kabooms go KABOOM in the Series for Arizona... Tom Smith was a Chicago favorite til he was shipped off for a boatload of future. To both Kaboom "implode" and Kaboom "explode" in the same Series... typical Kaboom. And John Miller, a '17 All Star, splitting time between the teams... he always looked so mean (it's that D- Leadership.)

Thanks for the great baseball spirit, Big Rich. You are certainly a splendid key element in the league and will be missed.
