2001 TRL Hall of Fame Ballot

August 28, 2013 at 10:22PM View BBCode

Condensing the previous two retirement classes with the returning nominees. If I miss anyone you think is worthy of being on the ballot, let me know and I'll place him on the next one.

Vote for whomever you think is worthy of election. I will keep this thread active through the playoffs... or until we get 100% participation (or nearly so). Whichever comes first.

The Rules:

- All current team owners are eligible to vote.
- A player receiving "yes" votes on at least 75% (rounded up) of the ballots with a minimum of 8 votes will be elected.
- A player must receive at least two "yes" votes to remain on the ballot for next season.
- Any players on the ballot 5 times and do not receive enough votes to be elected will be removed from future ballots.

Thanks for running the HOF.

Hipolito Williams - RP
Max Paine - 1B
Fred Knapp - OF
Kato Omura - 1B
Ricky Day - SS
Lou Fulton - C
Tommy Lyden - OF

Feel like I'm voting for too many guys again here, but will rationalize by considering this 2000's and 2001's worth of votes... :)

Yeah, this is really two ballots in one since I've been so busy of late. Also, keep in mind that we have a few guys in there that came very close to election on the last ballot.

Phila votes:

Kimber
Weber
Day
Omura

I'd like to amend my vote to add the following:
Fulton
Knapp
Tyriver

I realize 7 is a lot of nominees but I think they're all deserving. If they deserve to be in, I don't think it matters how many are nominated on a ballot.

Kimber
Tyriver (for surviving all those trades)

you guys are tough voters... 250-97, 4 Cy Young Awards... and not even on half the ballots? Wow.

At least they take the time to vote, guru... Until you do the same on a consistent basis, you have no room to complain.

While I will end up voting for Weber, I think what you are seeing is a backlash to your style of gaming a faulty bull pen setting that allows you to pull SPs as early as the 3rd of 4th inning and setup your RPs to have stupidly phenomenal seasons. A setting that Michael1 can backup as to news that the Admins are working to fix... as we have the same problem with a particular owner in another league.

The Pilots vote for:

Hipolito Williams
Kirk Gibson
Lou Fulton
Ricky Day
Tommy Lyden

And a courtesy vote for Tyriver, who should be wearing a hat for each of the teams he played for if he gets inducted into the HoF.

EDIT: After further consideration, I have removed my vote for Potsie Weber.

My starting pitchers have won 6 of the last 8 Cy Young Awards.

I vote for Weber.

Just speaking for myself, I neither rewarded nor punished Weber for the Sim loophole that allows for oddities like 276 IP and 110 GP in a season by reliever. Nor for the inevitable win totals and therefore awards that came with this. (Sim award voting is set up to mirror RL voting after all, where fallible baseball voters are disproportionally in love with such things as win totals.) But through cold analysis, a career 1.25 WHIP and 3.77 ERA just didn't make the cut for me.

Regarding the loophole, there was a long thread on it in the site forum and I have to chuckle at how the wrong loophole was closed, and the main point was missed. The issue wasn't that a starter can be pulled whenever. It was that a reliever could, as mentioned earlier, do things like throw 250+ innings or pitch in 110+ games, and not have a wing of the team's medical facility named after him after his arm falls off...or at the very least, not suffer dramatic declines in effectiveness.

But, it is what it is. I can't blame Guru for lobbying for his player or using him in a way that the site allows.

Guru is doing this in another league as well. It is just not feasible that every game is a "bullpen game" Some starters have to be able to go 7 or more once in a while.

Oh, don't get me wrong, bdavids. I do tip my hat to guru and others who can come up with a strategy that exploits a fault with the game and leads to success. I personally don't have a problem with it. However, I have spoken with several other owners that do. In another league I left a handful of seasons ago, there was a very, very, very long debate on whether a certain handful of RPs from a particular team should be let into that league's HoF due to the owner settings that had them nearly doubling the IPs of the SPs. guru's tactics here were brought up a few seasons back, and there were some grumbling about them at the time... though not blaming him for taking advantage of the situation.

So, I merely point out that there is potential backlash for a situation that some may deem as borderline cheating. Kind of the same sort of situation as the whole tanking debate we had a couple of seasons back. People do tend to take that kind of thing into consideration when voting.

As for him lobbying, I don't have a problem with that either. I personally believe Weber should get in for his personal performance. I too am kind of shocked that he hasn't gotten more support. I was just making a suggestion as to why others may not be supporting him.

While Weber's ERA and WHIP are a bit high for HoF standards IMO, his win total is strong. Also, you do have to credit the guy for going out there for a total of 1529 times and 2800+ innings as a RP with C- endurance and B- health... and only end up injured 4 times for 91 days in his career.

Wow is right!

I'm amazed he received even one vote. Weber is a sham. The stats are a sham, the Cy Youngs are a sham. Four Cy Youngs for a middle reliever with 11 saves? 250 wins...are you kidding me??? There's nothing even close in MLB.

Weber's stats have absolutely no basis in reality. I'm actually astonished so many players are willing to vote for nonsense like this. Do you guys really want a sham like this in the HOF?

This sim player and his stats only exist because the owner cheated the rest of us. "Exploiting a game flaw."? I'm not willing to be so kind.

Too many people these days are willing to look the other way while others cheat the rest of us. Exploiting a game flaw is not in keeping with what my sense of fair play means. Trying to paint shades of gray about what the meaning of cheating is just doesn't cut it with me. Bad enough we have to live with people exploiting flaws in the systems in real life, do we really need to condone it here to.

guru can lobby for his player all he wants, and I can lobby against him. The player's stats only exist because guru took advantage of a game flaw. I don't think that should be rewarded, and I don't think a player that couldn't possibly exist in real life belongs in the sim HOF either.

Pittsburgh Pitts vote for:

Ricky Day

Gil Hodges - 7 Gold Gloves added to decent offensive numbers does it for me.

Jose Mayes - 7 Gold Goves and #6 in Steals. Players like this don't get enough love.

Well, the system is exploited in real life. Look at Rivera. Going to retire as an all time legend because of the "save" statistic, which everybody knows is ridiculously flawed. He probably could have never made it as a starter. Thus his value is extremely limited. I'd rather have 225 innings of average Tim Hudson than 65 innings of lights out Rivera used for one inning in a bunch of 3-0, 3-1 games.

I guess Weber would sully the good name of this fictional hall of fame, but I really don't think Siguru is cheating us or the system. If he wants to give a guy with a 1.25 WHIP and a 3.85 era 100 games and 250 innings, so be it.

I raised a stink a few months back about Pierzinsky tanking in order to build up a winner, and I guess stuff like that can be annoying, but I don't think he cheats, nor do I think Siguru cheats. Its a matter of what you want out of the game. Some guys like to win at all costs, and they enjoy building teams and playing in that manner. Like you gator, I prefer some semblance of reality, so I try and play it rather traditionally. Whatever. I just enjoy the game in my own way. I guess being the all time champion of my computer pretend baseball league does not mean that much to me, although my wife would disagree...

To further my thought. I am a Braves fan and we have Craig Kimbrel now, who is awesome, just a beast. However, it annoys me to no end that he is the "closer" and is thus saved for save situations. If we are up 1 in the 8th with the bases loaded that is a job for the inferior "setup man".

Up 3-0 in the 9th against the punchless marlins, well then by God its Kimbrel time!! makes no sense to me.

"I guess Weber would sully the good name of this fictional hall of fame, but I really don't think Siguru is cheating us or the system."

Of course he is cone. Think about it this way....

Four Cy Young Awards. Every year Weber won a Cy Young he denied another player the prize. Players who lost because they put up honest numbers that couldn't beat the pumped up numbers Weber had. What owner here doesn't get a kick out of having one of their players win an award? Siguru found a way to scam the system, and has absolutely no qualms about stealing those awards from other players playing the game fair and square.

Eleven All Star Awards. How many awards would this POS have won pitching in 50/60 games and working 60/70 innings? How many owners of the 6th place vote getter for RP's would have liked to have won those All Star Awards?

Multiply that by all the RP's Siguru is running this dirtbag move with. How many other owners in how many leagues are getting screwed out of awards for their players because they're being stolen from them?

Consider this too. Is it possible some player who might have lost a Cy Young or a couple of All Star awards didn't get into the HOF because of it? Maybe. Lot's of players in this game like to see lots of awards and trophies when voting for HOF. One more Cy Young or a couple more stars just might have pushed a guy over the top.

If that's not cheating other players I sure don't know what is.

I've just had it up to my eyeballs with the notion that's so prevalent these days that's it's just fine to put your hand in someone else's pocket and take what you want. You can't even play a damn game for a diversion. Guys just have to find a way to work the system so they can put a bunch of make believe trophies on their make believe mantels.

Well that's what I'm getting at. Weber could have been used as a "closer" for all those good Chicago teams and have racked up a huge number of saves and gotten in the HOF that way.

I have a guy, frank frierson, who, by any objective measure, sucks. As my closer he has picked up 6 all star nods and a fireman award since I started using him as a closer in his os 26. If I used him for three or four more years and he picked up say 500 saves and 10 as picks, he would get votes for the hall even though he stinks.

I guess I hear you on the stealing awards from good starters argument, but their are relievers in the real hall who nobody would ever choose from the all time greats to start a game seven. Sutter? Gossage? Wilhelm? Eck? Of course those guys are not comparable to Clemons or Maddux. But, as Liam neeson said, they have a particular set of skills. Weber is the goose of the league for me I guess, so I voted him in.

I disagree with you that the Save stat is flawed. But the gaming of the game that this flaw has in it should not disqualify a player from the HOF. But this is the steroid era of Sim D only for Pitchers.
As for awards another proble soe may have encountered is the month long shut down of players once the playoffs are assured. That skews awards as well.
