Old play-by-play files.

Right now, single-season leagues see full play-by-play for the current season; for the prior season, they see only the result of each play, and for seasons prior to that they get no play-by-play data at all. This is for regular season games; postseason games retain the full play-by-play detail until the league is purged.

Unfortunately, the database is becoming unmanageably large, and we really don't have very many leagues compared to baseball. This is because play-by-play detail for football has far more detail than baseball and takes up far more space; there are many more stats (and types of stats) to keep track of, and I keep them on a game-by-game basis rather than an annual basis (to enable all sorts of splits).

So unfortunately I am going to have to start limiting past play-by-play activity for Premium leagues. Basically, Premium leagues will see full play-by-play data for the most recent 5 seasons, and then only limited play-by-play data for the next 5 seasons back. More than 10 seasons back, no play-by-play data will be available at all. Again, postseason games will have the full detail available (although this will build up and someday will need to be cut back as well; maybe more than 20 seasons back all that will be available is Sim Bowl details.)

I am not sure what to do about stats; we don't want to delete stats for classic retired players, obviously. Maybe shuffle all that data to a separate database.

I am working on the changes now, so in the next offseasons that occur the old play-by-play data in Beta will start getting purged. Please share your thoughts about this: how important is 100-season old play-by-play data to you? Or do you never look at regular season games from prior seasons and don't even need 10 years of it?

Thanks!

I'm of the latter group.

Yeah, I don't have to have the play by play from all those seasons ago. The stats are nice to have though.

I may only keep detailed play by play for 3 seasons then.

When the full play-by-play is available, it looks like this:

2nd and 11 for the Cree, they huddle and line up in a Pro Set; the Warhawks line up in a 4-3.
Dean Belk takes the snap, fakes a handoff to Bert McDonald.
Belk passes to Leo Currie at the WIN 39.
The ball is caught at the WIN 39 by Leo Currie.
Currie breaks a tackle by Dick Ehin.
Pass by Dean Belk is completed to Leo Currie for a 15 yard gain.

When it gets stripped down, it would look like this:

2nd and 11 for the Cree, they huddle and line up in a Pro Set; the Warhawks line up in a 4-3.
Pass by Dean Belk is completed to Leo Currie for a 15 yard gain.

In addition, the bar graphs for each player's fatigue are not available and the individual player numbers don't appear in the formations nor are the players in the formation highlighted (as the formation and fatigue data is also removed).

The only thing that the full play-by-play is helpful for is setting strategies. It only applies to current owners and current players and current teams. I think that 3 seasons should be more than sufficient for even the most devoted of owners.

What I also need to do is condense stats. I will likely do this either on retirement or for any seasons more than 5 seasons ago. When stats are condensed, splits and game logs won't be available for that season. This will save a huge amount of database space, as 24 or 25 records per player will condense down to 3 (Presesason, regular season and postseason). I need to make some structural changes to make this happen, though.

As long as historical stats are available and you can always see season and career totals for players, I think it's OK. If something has to give, these seem like safe choices.

Preseason stats. They don't hold much relevance, for me:o. Save the current year and last season for comparison. Delete the rest. Don't save any for posterity.

Okay, the old Play by Play purge has been added. It will keep full play-by-play for 3 seasons and partial play-by-play for an additional 3 seasons. Postseasons keep full play-by-play forever.

I may rush Beta Premium to the postseason to test this.

In unrelated news, please report if you have any issues changing team or player names.

Beta Premium went through its offseason a few days ago. All non-postseason play-by-play data older than 5 seasons was deleted, and the remaining play-by-play older than 2 seasons was condensed.

Please take a look at old schedules and such and help me make sure nothing is broken.

Thanks!
