Waiver Wire System

June 15, 2004 at 10:08PM View BBCode

Everything is pretty much in place and I have been doing some testing in the ST league. Let me know if you see any more issues.

Here are things I still need to add:

1) If a team claims his own player off of waivers, they should get the player automatically when the waiver clears.

2) If its the first 30 games of the season, last year's standings plus this years standings will be used. I'm going to take a stab at using the reverse order of the draft in 1950 if possible, but it could be tricky to do.

3) Multiple claims processing. Still need to build in logic so that once a team claims a player, they fall to the back of the list for any other claims that get processed that day. Someone suggested using a sandbox system where the waiverwire priority gets reset once a week - its a decent idea, but I'm not sure if I want to get to that level of complexity. Actually, I'm not sure if I want to get to the level of teams falling to the back of the pack for claims within the same day. I am going to move forward with some other changes after 1 & 2 are finished and come back to #3 at a later time once we've used the system for a while and gotten some feedback.

I'm just kind of following along this very exciting feature. Question: is there anything to keep a team from continually demoting veterans and then reclaiming them? This would buy you a handful of games to bring up an alternate pitcher or something. You could do it ad infinitum, unless I'm missing something. I know this is how it is in MLB - the waiving team can withdraw the waiver and take the guy back into their big league roster if they don't like him being claimed by another team. I can't imagine there being a problem with abusing this in real life, but here, look out.

Interesting loophole - I'll have to give it some thought. Maybe I shouldn't change the rule on a team claiming its own guy. Another potential sticky point is that you can have more than 26 players after a player is claimed. Maybe for major league claims you should have to specify a player to send down if the claim goes through.

OK, I'm probably misunderstanding something here or missed another disucssion, but:

Tyson said: If a team claims his own player off waivers, he automatically gets that player once waivers clear.

Huh? What would be the point, then, of forcing a team to waive a guy who's out of options? When they just reclaim him and be assured of getting him?

Again, I'm assuming I missed something here since my reading of this makes no sense.

I thought that if he passed through waivers, he would go to the minors. Am I wrong in my interpretation?

The point is that it gives you an opportunity to withdraw the waiver, i.e. change your mind - just like in the MLB rules. IF you see that somebody else has claimed your guy (will you be able to see that here?), or you decide you don't want him down after all, you can "withdraw" your assignment of the player and bring him back to the bigs by claiming him yourself. He has to go back on the major league roster of course if you do this.

I think it's a nice touch, but may turn out to be problematic. How about this - you may only "withdraw" (re-claim your own guy) each player once per season, or maybe only make 3 withdrawls total per season?

In MLB it is not uncommon for teams to withdraw a player from waivers if another team claims him. We should make sure that we have that option, with no limits on the times that the team does this. For a particular player, we may need to limit this to prevent abuse.
