Season Preview with Ranking Predictions
Reggie White Football League 1960
1. BUF snagged star QB Bill Station, which means their power hungry offense should have some real zip in the passing game even with Bill's seeming health problems. With a decent offensive line to protect him, we should see great numbers from Bill. Bill's favorite target will likely be Walt Manucci at TE.
2. DAL WR Jimmy Birk should light up the secondary with QB Al Fontenot likely able to find Jimmy at any time behind an impressive front five. In addition John Davis should find open seams in the middle of the field from his TE position. All Pro Rollin Emanuel at OLB will cause havoc on opposing offensive schemes with two solid LBs backing him up on every play.
3. KC has assembled an impressive offensive line making their options on attack open for Star QB Fred Maxey. His favorite targets Don Barnes at WR and Les Bennett at TE should keep defenses back peddling. A solid defense rounds out the team.
4. FLA looks to keep playing its "iron defensive" strategy this season as well. Their strong defensive front offers stiff competition to both the run and an aggressive attack against the passing attack. It will be interesting to see if FLA uses Ron Manley as a Gunner or playing CB. Look for FLA to use RB Bill Farris to create a ball control game behind an incredible front five.
5. MIC should be tough to run against this season. With an all start DT and Al Claridge, super start DE, it seems only Herb Ferko is holding them back from a perfect trifecta on the defensive line. The secondary, however, should be able to hold its own with Kevin Runequist at OLB. Bruce Corgan rounds out the crew at CB, shutting down any possible passing threats. With all this power on defense the only question is if Tom Carter's passing attack can carry the offense.
6. ARI's running attack will feature all pro Dunstan Freeman. He doesn't appear to be an every down back but he has the potential to run right through defenses that aren't prepare for him. Paired with Russ Bailey at WR, the two should create havoc for defenses throughout the league. The only flying the ointment for ARI is the lack of a quality Center.
7. CIN's WR Wylie Payne needs little introduction but his routes should keep corners from risking a blitz and Ron Wilson at TE is a threat over the middle on every down. Both targets will get the attention of QB Ed Bethune who may have to get rid of the ball quickly with a weaker front line. Look for play action to be featured heavily as defenses will have to respect RB Lasalie Looker. Shutdown Corner Lou Harvey should keep QBs from hitting their #1 receivers.
8. CLE has a stand-out receiver in Bill McNally. With a strong front line (with the exception of Center) they look to be able to deliver the ball. A solid defensive secondary should keep offenses on their toes.
9. NY has a decent passing game and no real holes in its front five unlike to many teams this season. A strong secondary makes up for an average pass rush.
10. WAS has a strong defensive front with Starter Cris Thomasson at DT and Tom Obst at Middle Line Backer. Running should be hard against them this year. Offensively they seems thin with no real standout players but a good offensive line.
11. TEN shows some real promise on offense with WR Pat Stein and QB Glenn Chesbro. A reasonable front line gives these two a shot at making many an opposing secondary look juvenile. A good secondary may suffer from a weak front.
12. CAR retained Red Mayes at FS, Floyd Davis at CB and standout OLB Bill Smith giving them the strong defensive credentials needed for this league.
13. JAC's Charlie Crockett might look out of place at WR, but he should be able to pull in the ball in critical third downs. He'll need to do just that for JAC to have any offense. On defense the team has solid players with LB Tom Drury and FS Joe Frye the two players to keep an eye on.
14. MEM may have to survive on the foot of Kicker Bill Dunbar. A reasonable defensive squad can't make up for a lack luster offense. Only WR Terry Bauman seems like a threat, but with troubles at Center there may not be time for the QB Herman Smith to make the connection.
15. MON has some interesting options to consider. Over spending special teams has given them several options that might better be played on offense. WRs Ken Banaszek-Kinney and Paul Richardson both look to be decent at Kick Returner but are they really both needed? With a solid offensive line we may see them either traded or move to WR. MON's defense is solid enough within obvious holes but again some strange spending on Gunners where CBs might have been better buys.
16. TOR's RB Herman Ward will likely carry this team through what is likely going to be a hard season. Defensively the team stacks up against well against anyone, but an inability scoring points may hold this team back. It's possible that some late season chemistry between QB George Holloway and WR Andrew Jurich might give them just enough to be contenders.Text
