RE: Joe Daggers. Can someone explain how an OF with an F arm has only 1 error in 66 games. Just another one of those things that stick out as to the inaccuracy of some of the game code...[Edited on 6-9-2004 by chamberlien]

Not only that, but he's a 1B playing out of position in the OF. Seriously though, I am sure his time will come. You asked for an explanation so here comes...the game is a computer program...meaning no emotion or specific reality event to event. I am sure everyone has people both overperforming and underperforming...I am sure the odds are low that Daggers has one error through his next 200 ABs, but possible. I really dont think this has anything to do with the code. Its like expecting an A+ hitter to always hit a homerun...

And you bring up a great point about a 1B playing out of position in the outfield. A person at 1B doesn't need a powerful arm to begin with. He needs to be able to catch all sorts of hard, oddly thrown balls, but not very often is he throwing to 2B or 3B. He need a decent arm, but not one powerful for long distance throwing, like from the outfield. He should be suffering out-of-position penalties as well as a position not only out of position, but in the outfield. A position player playing out of position, but still in the infield should suffer less penatlies then him going to the outfield. I guess since he is an F already, he can't really suffer much more, but still, it's a very odd statistic that he only has 1.

Absolutely it is an anomaly...the other thing I have to keep reminding myself is that I assume an F is relative to other MLB players and not the population as a whole...even an F in a category I would think would have some talent, otherwise they wouldnt have made the majors. Daggers is an F relatively but that doesnt mean he throws like my mom :lol:

Dont know about that...but she does seem to throw inside when people get hits off her, and boy do you need to look out :o

I decided to trade Daggers after the game where the Sisters of Mercy threw out the first pitch and all 8 of the blessed nuns had more oomph than Joe.

I argued that even if he cannot run, the chance of a ball being hit his way was far less than the action he'll see at first base. Even with an F arm, all he has to do is throw the ball a short distance to an infielder.
My point is that as an outfielder your F arm guy will have less opportunities to make errors than an infielder. Also, if he does what he's supposed to do and hit the cutoff man instead of trying to gun down runners at the plate he'll keep the hitter/runner from advancing to second thus keeping a possible double play in order. I think what's happening in games is that baserunners are scoring against you that would be holding if you had a better arm out there. You don't see it in errors, but you pitcher's ERA's are higher.

I help coach a team of 13-14 year olds. We have a kid who's probably a F in range and a F in arm. Because we have so many kid's we must play, (16) we have to put him somewhere. The head coach tried to make him a firstbaseman. He can catch if the ball if it's thrown right at him. They were afraid what would happen if we put him in the outfield and he had to "run" for a ball hit into the gap. nah, I think an F arm in the outfield would be like playing crockette....or maybe a John Elway throw...Arm goes forward but the ball stays in mid-air then floops to the ground....and repeat.

I believe arm does matter in the infield.

My understanding is that arm doesn't affect errors in the outfield, just range. Outfielder's arms, I think, only affect tag plays. And there is no code for errors on tag plays.I believe arm does matter in the infield.
