Playaction Pass

Is the success and/or result of this play dependent in any way upon how much you run? For example, would my PAP's be more successful and generate better results if I ran the ball 40 times a game versus 30 or 20?

No, but it should be. The main effect of a PAP is to further reduce the defense's effectiveness when they are in a run defense. But an easy way to make a PAP more effective would be to let it trigger the defensive automatic adjustments for overusing running plays... so you would have to run enough to almost trigger that, then the PAP would seal the deal, causing the defense to switch to a run defense on the fly.

I was planning this for when I add a shotgun draw play so I could also do the same thing in reverse.

That would be awesome. I'd love both the PAP to have variable effectiveness, and for Shotgun to have some running abilities. I'm a huge fan of the Pistol Read offense, and would love to get to a point where I could run something similar. I'd kill just for a Pistol formation at this point.

Are you saying its like that already and its an easy way for us to take advantage of it, or its an easy change you could make?

I believe it is already like that. I don't have any on-hand data, but the majority of my PAP attempts are after a good amount of runs, and my execution rate is rather high. It would make sense that they'd key on the run, and the PAP would take advantage of that.

I've wondered about the best way to utilize play action passing but it's hard to control the situation enough to really set it up because you need to run enough times in a row to get the defense keyed into the run so you can really burn them with the play action pass. Obviously you would have to run a LOT just to keep consistently getting enough run plays in a row to get the defense thinking run, but then wouldn't your run game suffer from being keyed in on so much? You're probably better off just having a strong run game and running a lot(but not to the excess implied above) and relying on the other owners to be so worried about your rushing attack that they play a lot of run defense, thus setting up the play action for you. :D

It is a change I could (and probably should) make. Right now, the best way to use a PAP is to drop it into situations where the defense expects a run, or against defenses that are heavy run defenders.
