2004 Draft

Opinions about this years draft? I felt it was one of the more talented draft class since perhaps the 1995 draft! I was debating on whether to draft Olson or Brown first. Obviously Brown is Major League ready, he will probably be in Baltimore's rotation soon enough and contribute some instantly. I may be wrong, but my philosophy has always been to draft, talented, young players and develop them in your system. Of course it's all situation, if my club was in contending phase, I might have went with Brown. But with McBride on the verge of being ready, I can afford to stand pat and develop Olsen for 3-4 seasons, depending on how fast he progresses. This being a hitting league, great starting pitching is very rare, especially pitchers that can dominate right away and at a young age. From what I've seen in HWL that is far and few between. The best pitchers in HWL like a Codero, need at least 3-5 before they dominate.
KC might have gotten the steal of this draft, Tom Herrscher looks like a future MVP. Only 17 yrs old, his power and speed looks like it will eventually go up to A or better, his contact will almost surely improve to B or better. He will be a consistent 25HR+ 90RBI player with speed. Also kudos to Brooklyn for selecting 17 yr old SS, Nap Brock who is a future all-star. You can never put a premium on skill positions such as Pitchers, shortstops, and catchers. This was a strong draft and I feel every team gained a very good player with their picks.
Naturally some will probably be involved in a trade sooner or later. My strategy has always been(this goes for any sport) you draft talent, and trade for needs!! Good luck to all the owners and I look forward to another season in HWL, it's pleasure playing against such knowledgeable owners(just please no lopsided trade proposals, lol) I know it's worth a shot, but it seems some owners have read the "George Marshall" book of negotions, lol

I thought rounds 2-5 were much weaker than usual. Too many 21+ rookies with poor health.
Beyond the Top 5 picks, the rest of the first round were long term projects or B- pitchers that need some luck with ICs to be decent, so I'm not sure how this set of players will look 4 seasons from now.
1995 was a great draft pool.
