With both the Privateers and the Ramblers upsetting Cleveland and Chicago in the opening round of the playoffs, there would be a rematch of last year's TRL World Series when Baltimore topped the Ramblers in 7 games. The Ramblers were bent on getting revenge for last year's defeat.
Game 1
Baltimore jumps out to a 8-0 lead, and despite a strong comeback by the Ramblers, the Privateers hold on for a 9-7 win. Jerry Wilson and Rafael Batton homered for Baltimore, while Joe Birdsall had 2 HR and a 2B for Philly.
Game 2
The Privateers get to new Rambler ace Sam Kimber for 5 runs in less than 6 innings and take game 2 by a 6-4 score. Roy Sutko goes 8 innings for the win.
Game 3
The Ramblers return home trailing 2 games to none and look to Sam Wiggins to get them back into the series. Sam comes up big tossing a 4-hit shutout and Smacks McArthur's 3-run HR is all that was needed as the Ramblers get their 1st win, 5-0.
Game 4
Once again, strong starting pitching and another 3-run HR by Smacks McArthur gives the Ramblers a win to tie the series at 2 games each. Johnny Roseboro goes 8 strong innings, and Fireman of the Year, Earle Durnbaugh, gets the save. The 4-1 victory was the 4th straight home win of the series.
Game 5
This game starts out with Baltimore taking a 2-0 lead with a first-inning HR by Tony Erickson. The game remains with that score until 2 out in the bottom of the 8th with pinch-hitter Paul Schemanske's single followed by a 2B by Rube Nagelson and a single by Phineas Mazerati which tied the game. In the bottom of the 9th with the score still 2-2, Smacks McArthur doubled and then scored on Angus Bash's RBI single. The Ramblers are now just 1 win away from their first World Series title as the series moves to Baltimore.
Game 6
Roy Sutko and Sam Kimber match up in game 6, the Ramblers one win away, and the Privateers looking to even the series. Philly strikes first with an unearned run in the 1st inning, but Baltimore ties it in the 6th inning. The game goes in to the 9th still tied at 1 when Harlan Summa reaches on an error by normally sure-handed 2B Phil Powers. Then pinch hitter Ed Harris gets on base on another error by SS Joe Birdsall, who was at the position due to an injury to regular SS Ricky Day earlier in the series. Jose Maye then ends the game with a 3-run HR which ties the series at 3 games apiece.
Game 7
For the second consecutive year, the Ramblers and Privateers hook up for a 7th game to decide the TRL championship. Sam Wiggins, who shut out Baltimore in game 4 vs. Mike Henneman. The game is scoreless until the Ramblers score an unearned run in the 6th inning only to see the Privateers tie it in the 7th as Travis Fryman walks, steals second base and scores on a March Humphries single. Bob Goulish's 2-run HR puts the Ramblers in front in the 8th, but the Privateers come right back with 3 in their half, capped by Fryman's 2-run HR. Joel Parker protects the 4-3 lead, and the Privateers are TRL champions for the 2nd year in a row.
Congrats to Deep Threat for back to back championships. We gave you quite a battle but came up a little short. It's a long road back, but maybe we can do it again next year?
