Playing Out Of Position - part 2
January 16, 2003 at 02:33AM View BBCode
Okay, I've added on to what I was working on last night. Here's the latest:
I took the comments into account on Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard and made modifications.
I have taken age and defensive skill into account when how quickly a guy can switch positions.
I added an inactivity clause which will take away from secondary positions for not playing in them.
I redid out of position penalties so that 50% of the penalty is based on how good the player is at the secondary position.
I put code in to swap a players primary and secondary positions once it reaches a certain level (A+++). At this point, the former primary position becomes a secondary position and the guy has a high A for the skill at his former primary position.
I have some other changes I'd like to make over the next week or so, then we'll speed the league back up again.

Very cool.
Currently, a lot of my guys are showing a secondary position that is the same as their current position (a LF is showing LF as his secondary position). Is that a bug? I also noticed that P is no longer a secondary position, which is a good thing.
What else is being added? I can't wait!!!!

I found a couple bugs already. One was that pinch hitters for the pitcher were being credited with games at Pitcher. I cleaned up the database for these cases.
I'll have to look into the same position phenomenum. I've noticed this as well.
I almost have the minor league thing set up, so that you can specify you want to improve a guy at a secondary position.
I'll be adding code for a wild card.
I will create a more sophisticated waiver wire system, complete with options for players.
I'll be tweaking the off season improvement logic to help shift the balance between pitchers and hitters.

I've got a RF that I have been playing in LF all season, but he is still just rated an F for LF as his secondary pos. I realize that ABE may only take into account the games played since the addition of that code, but still, its been about a week's worth of playing time, and I would have expected to see some improvement since on the playing out of position chart it was rated an "E" (going from RF to LF), and it should only take a few weeks worth of game time for this so make a switch.
Am I just missing something, or is there a bug here?

It's only been a few games. Be patient. :)
I have a SS who I play at 2B every game and he's a D at 2B. Have you been playing your guy regularly?

I found a bug with Right Fielders last night that I corrected. He should start accumulating points for LF.
