Zeta is paused

September 29, 2012 at 03:47AM View BBCode

I am going to take this opportunity to pause things and fix the tiebreakers to be more NFL-ish.

It's been almost 5 days, is Zeta ever going to start again so we can see if the tie breakers work ?

I have not gotten this working so I am going to unpause Zeta so we can keep going; I will try again next season.

So how did AFE determine the tie breakers ?

It doesn't matter which method was used, I was sure to miss out! LOL

The only tiebreaker was for the National Conference Wildcard. It would use head to head record between all teams with 10-6 records: CAL, SEA, HAM, MIN, and TB. After that it uses total points in common games, then net points overall, then coin flips.

Interestingly enough, of the 3 10-6 teams in the National Conference, HAM did NOT play either TB or MIN in the regular season.

Chris, can't you parse the data so that it separates the teams into buckets prior to running tie-breakers?

1) Split AFC/NFC (Groups 1 & 2)
2) Split Divisions (Groups 1a, etc.)
3) Determine Division Winners (1 each per group)
4) Eliminate division winners (returning the remaining teams to groups 1 & 2)
5) Determine wildcards (2 per group)

So your tie-breaker code would work in steps that way. And it would still function as basic splitting and bucket sorting.

That is essentially what I am trying to do but I have something wrong somewhere.

There was also, or should have been, a tie breaker for the second AFC wildcard between San Fran and Cleveland, both 8-8.

Also why would Calgary, AFC, and Seattle, Division Champs, be involved in an NFC wildcard decision ?

Because right now the process is the inverse of the draft position process, which evaluates all teams. That is, in a nutshell, the problem; it needs to evaluate all teams for the draft and iterate outward from division to conference for the tiebreakers.

The database portion is correct, but I have a code bug somewhere that is failing.
