Detroit Rockets Mid-Season Report '50-'51

At the end of the 1950 season, the Rockets found themselves in the ALCS against Boston. Although Boston had been a tough team to beat all year, the Rockets believed the ALCS and WS was within their reach. And well it might have been if not for a complete and total collapse of the pitching staff who gave up fifty-five (55) runs in the 5-game series. The Rockets responded with 31 runs of their own but it wasn't nearly good enough.
That was last season.
Looking on to 1951.

Pitching
We are looking at a much improved pitching staff for '52 with only two changes from last season.
SP Mickey Baird was acquired during the off-season form KC and will take over the number two spot in the rotation. Lefty Jack Murphy, 25 who was 11-9 last season has been sent down to the Del Rio farm team. Jack will probably be offered on the trade block after the Am-Draft.
RP Al Dougherty, 22, pitched 60+ major league innings last season and showed great promise. Al was sent down to Del Rio during mid-season for intensive coaching but was brought back up when Tom Anderson became injured. Al will be spending this next season in Del Rio working on his fast ball but may be called up late in the season or in the event the bullpen sees more injuries.
Veteran Jarvis Vernon, 39 postponed retirement plans to return as the team's Set-up Closer. Last season, Jarvis won 8-games and had 5 saves. The crafty veteran K'd 81 batters in 119 innings and had a 3.38 ERA.

The Line up

At this time Owner Dogbelly does not plan on making any significant line up changes.
The off season acquisition of CF Ginger Romo is expected to add to the bench-depth and add power against lefties.

The draft is not expected to help the colu since the Rockets first three picks have been traded away. But the trade desk will be open after tomorrow's draft. Dogbelly is always ready to listen to a proposal.

Public Service Announcement
The winter meeting of the AFC has been moved from Washington D.C. to Nuevo Laredo. For further information contact Casper C/O the Senators.

San Francisco would be a more suitable place for the AFC members to gather. You could all get same sex mariage certificates while your there.

Its good to see Jarvis Vernon and Woody Holdem will be back with the Rockets for another season. I didn't know they made geritol in 1951???

Actually, we've talked with Jarvis about taking over the Del Rio club as manager after he retires.

The outlook for the coming year looks alot like last yr. Solid hitting but maybe a little improved. Three good starters and 2 really bad ones. But the big problem is still the bullpen. It killed us last year and doesnt look much better this year.
The Redbirds went for pitching help in the amateur draft. But they are years away from being any help at all.

Oh well as long as we finish ahead of Brooklyn again we will be satisfied.

Boston Brawlers mid season report:

Although manager Lefty Mcgulicutty was assuming the worse for retirement of a few top players, everyone decided to hang on for yet another year. "We had to make a few changes especially with the closer role", Lefty said, "Bobby did a great job for us last year but I think its time for a change in that position". He went on to say it would be the best thing for the future of the team.

Looks like another good run once again this season. The draft was a little rough considering we had the last pick but new prospect Earl Hedlund may be the future for the closer role. General Manager, Miner Cutts, said the trade market may be the way to go to get that one player to give us the distinct advantage in the division at least for the short term.

It looks like we should have another competitive season in the AL again this year.

The Boston Brawlers proudly support the AFC and its cause!!
See you in Nuevo Laredo!!!!
