The New Orleans Bontemps lost a pair of great ones to retirement after the 1978 season, one expected and one a surprise.
Carl Peneranda opted for retirement after a fifteen career that saw him lead New Orleans to three Super Bowl wins and finish as #2 on the all time passing yardage list. The #2 pick in the 1964 draft Peneranda lead New Orleans to a Super Bowl victory in his rookie season and started every game, when healthy, for 13 1/2 seasons before being replaced by Aaron Jackson midway through the 1977 season. Many observers felt Peneranda would leave to pursue a starting job after the '77 season but he stayed because, as he said,
"I always wanted to retire a Bontemps Roulez".
A surprise retirement was CB John Davis, who started all 16 games in 1978 and had been penciled in as New Orleans starting LCB for 1979 before his announcement of his retirement. Davis had experienced serious health problems in the off season which lead him to decide that it was time to hang them up.
Asked to comment on the cornerback situation coach Jimmy McGinty was succinct, saying simply
"We're screwed"

Yeah, CB is usually slim pickings on the WW.
