Measurables for LB

February 07, 2012 at 07:10PM View BBCode

Is there currently a way to measure how effective a LB is? Right now I can't seem to know much of anything about them, how good they are at stopping the pass or run.

By measurables I mean actual stats, without stats I can't figure out what a skill represents.

INT and FF is about all, which are of limited use for LBs. abe doesn't keep track of tackles yet.

Tackles are going to be helpful, but more so I think it'd be good to know only within the play description who blew a coverage, or which zone a pass was completed in.

For example:

12:45. 0 0 MON 1/10 MON 41
1st and 10 for the Polar Bears, they huddle and line up in a Pro Set; the Direwolves line up in a 4-2-5 Nickel.
Gabe Kerr takes the snap and drops back into the pocket.
Kerr is under heavy pressure.
Kerr passes to Frank Campbell at the MON 48.
The ball is caught at the MON 48 by Frank Campbell.
Coverage blown by Skip Bayless
Campbell breaks a tackle by Bub Kanicki.
Pass by Gabe Kerr is completed to Frank Campbell for a 17 yard gain.
First down for the Montreal Polar Bears!

This would improve the current system because you learn A. Bayless blew coverage and B. Kanicki has bad tackling. The more we can learn about a play the better can we become at the game. I'm not in favor of giving the info away, such as % coverage blown in zone, but I think putting it into the text of a game and allowing coaches to track it itself makes it appropriate.

I agree, without this, we really can't coach to the best of our abilities - because we can't see the action.

I would love to see movement by the numbered players on the field. Even if you do chose to snap them back after each play. I can see who is giving too much room defensively and have a better understanding of how the pressure for the quarterback, or the biggest run stopper for the defense is. This would put the game in a whole to spot on the sim map.

Unfortunately, actually moving the players would require storing and sending too much data to DynastyVision. I may be able to put arrows on the field showing the chalkboard version of the play but it wouldn't account for simulated deviations.

There may be a solution at some point... mulling over the issue in my head I may be able to store all of the play data in external, includable files that could be cached by the browser, and then I would only have to store deviations in the play-by-play.... hmm. That could be a possible way to do a fully-animated play-by-play. Of course, it would take as long to watch as a real football game that way.

Chris, instead of getting complicated I think tackles and blown coverage would solve the issue of understanding who is at fault on a pass play, specifically LB. Right now I have no idea who is blowing a coverage on a pass.

Yup, I think the game and simulation is pretty great as it is. SimD baseball has done just fine without players moving around and catching the ball and all that jazz. All we really need is more information on what is happening: tackles, missed tackles, etc etc. We'll get the 'picture' in our head.
