The BPFL 1965 Draft 1st Round Analysis

November 05, 2011 at 06:42PM View BBCode

Hey I've got a few minutes this morning to do the draft analysis, kind of got caught with my pants down on this one as I didn't spend the usual time on my rankings but anyway.

#1 - Tampa Bay - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=178731]Eddie Durko[/url] WR - top wideout on the board he's got a great skill set and will help right away, #8 on my board as I'm stacked at WR he's a top player but I wouldn't have passed on...

#2 - Colorado - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176823]Dennis Rickards[/url] OLB - Wow, #1 on my board he's already the 2nd, or 3rd, best OLB in the league. Coverage skills need to improve but with his potential they will a great addition.

#3/#4 - San Diego/Cleveland - 2 more kickers - really ? would it be so hard to just set K and P to zero for a few years ?

#5- Calgary - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176810]Jack Strong[/url] DE - top DL in the draft, #3 on my board, he's got no real weaknesses and should start right away.

#6 - Anaheim - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176862]Mark Jones[/url] CB - top scoring DB, #6 on my board, he has some issues with potential and health plus must improve his speed but he's a nice acquisition.

#7 - Philadelphia - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=178749]Greg Jackson[/url] OLB - #4 on my board he's a great player already although speed and coverage skills need work.

#8 - Hamilton - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176831]Frank Chenoweth[/url] DE - #5 on my board he has some issues with stamina, potential and attitude but he's a starter from day one and a solid pick.

#9 - Arizona - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176844]Gibby Ohmer[/url] C - top O lineman in the draft he's got some issues with speed and agility and he doesn't pass block well yet but he's got lots of red letter skills and works cheap, a solid pick.

#10 - Birmingham - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176840]Kenny Jackson[/url] DE - another talented DE in this draft, there were a ton, Jackson doesn't knock you out but he's solid across the board and should contribute right away.

#11 - Oakland -[url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176837]Tank Hennessy[/url] HB - in a draft low on offensive skill players Oakland gets the top RB at #11, a solid pick, he needs work on carrying and breaking tackles but should be an impact player soon as their current starter is 29 .

#12 - Chicago - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176806]Tony Harrison[/url] HB - the #2 ranked back goes to a team that needs help in that area. Harrison has lots of raw talent, it'll be interesting to see who turns out better between him and Hennessy.

#13 - Miami - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=178773]Joey Rice[/url] DE - a risk/reward pick for a playoff team we'll see how it works out. Rice has great physical tools but his execution, attitude and potential scores are all very low, he's a boom or buts but his physical skills are certainly an asset to a playoff team.

#14 - Montreal [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176839]Doug Fleischman[/url] RT - a solid pick for the 16-0 Francophones. Fleischman has a solid skill set and no glaring weaknesses plus the bonus of working for the league minimum .

#15 - New York - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176822]Ike Wilson[/url] CB - well I guess it's only fair that since I beat them in the Super Bowl NY breaks my heart at #15 by taking my #2 player. I can't figure out how Wilson lasted this long, I admit he was higher on my board due to need but still at #15 he's a huge steal IMO. Great pass coverage and tackling combined with reasonable speed and execution and no glaring flaws. He'd start right away for me and I'm sure he will in NY as well.

#16 - New Orleans - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176901]Chick Carey[/url] DE - he's strong, he tackles well and is a bear against the rush. Carey's speed and pursuit are major issues but he won't be asked to start right away I'm just bummed that I missed out on Wilson by one pick.

Thanks for the analysis- always fun to read. You're being kind regarding Rice. I actually doulbe checked my rankings last night and still can't believe I had him as high as I did. Sure, I can use him but he's not first round material with the low potential and attitude. Besides the two kickers in the first rd, seems everyone else did pretty well.

Edit- I think I know now- Rice was one of the players with the ? for potential. Guess I got the answer, bleh.

My 2nd rounder, a TE with a 75 overall WR rating, and my 3rd rounder (a kicker) will both contribute this season. My D-line is very deep now with the addition of a DE in round 1. I would love to be able to trade one of my DE's for a similar OLB.

I thought [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=177014]Jones[/url], [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176811]Corral[/url] and [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176854]Cato[/url] were tremendous value in round two, your TE/Wr as well but my WR needs are nil.

I was also pleased to get [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176853]Lucas[/url] at the end of round 4 as a potential starting FB

Funnily enough, I actually traded my #2 pick for the top pick...I had too many LBs and WR was my weakest position..

I would've been happy to send over a WR of similar value, [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171681]Lee[/url] for example, for considerably less than Rickards .

Liked my draft. Never thought Wilson would fall to 15 and we filled some needs the rest of the way. Thought this draft was deep in value and I might have found a nice back-up QB in [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=176918]Bob Mathis[/url] on R4. HeŽs got a gangbanger ATT but 91 POT, weŽll see

Hammy, Nice job getting The Wiz... love a guy that can play both TE and WR. I would have taken him at 15 if not for the CB, I think he was great value at 24.

I also liked Manning, red.. nice player in a weak skill position draft

Interested to see how CB Mark Jones QB Johnny Marinaro S Jack Cato WR John DeLuca work out in ANA... I think Matt had a great draft.

Will still be willing to pick up a third receiver...and yeah, trust me, I wish I had done that trade over, but I was tired when I accepted lol

After the fixes go in, I expect that it will be fairly rare to have kickers and punters in the first round, and when you do they'll be worth it.
