Of course it's not all because of one player but New Orleans were 2-14 in 1963 and 10-6 in 1964 with the major addition being QB Carl Penaranda.
In 1963 the BTR had a team passing rating of 58, averaging 174.5 yards per game and in 1964 the rating was 85.3 with 218 yards per game . Interceptions were down from 23 to 12 even though attempts were up slightly and yards per attempt, while still low, were up over a yard.
The result was an offense that scored 124 more points, although in truth the defensive improvement was just as dramatic . It's tough to tell how much of the overall improvement was a result of better QB play but I'm sure happy we lucked into a top draft position in a year where there was an impact QB available.
