My QB is tougher than your QB

October 21, 2011 at 12:50PM View BBCode

In fact, he is so tough that he also plays DE and picks up a sack.

02:40. 0 10 ANA 3/10 CAL 18
3rd and 10 for the Aardvarks, they huddle and line up in a I Formation;
the Stamp Eaters line up in a 4-3.
The defense is keyed in.
Marc Evans takes the snap and drops back into the pocket.
Evans is under heavy pressure.
Marc Evans is sacked by Vyto Johnson for a 7 yard loss.

I am not sure why my QB is playing DE, and I really don't want him playing DE. Could we have a look and determine how he got inserted on the defensive line. (Or is this a new, super-secret feature to increase the sack count? ;) )

What it looks like to me is that the Stamp Eaters have adjusted their settings for when to sub out defenders, because almost the entire defense on the plays in that drive is made up of offensive players.

There are like 8 offensive players on D out there.

This could be a crazy glitch, but it appears that you have no rested defenders and the engine is finding the best options left.

The fact that he recorded a shutout this way is scary.

But now that the game's over, I'm looking at minutes played. No one on his defense came close to being on the field the whole time, whereas Anaheim's guys played a much higher percentage of the defensive downs.

Goldambre, have you made changes to the percentage for Substitutions on the position depth charts? I know I use all the defaults and have never seen anything remotely like this. If I had to guess, you are using something like 90-95% for players to return to the game. And with no one meeting that threshold, the game engine searches anywhere for someone with energy.

The QB played DE because he has a bit of strength and rates higher there than the two backup QBs.

There have been some glitches I've seen in the BPFL, my HB has played some DB this year even though I have 8 DBs on the roster .

I am running 80% out/90% in. I have been doing this all season, and have never seen this issue (though I have not been looking for it).

If the problem is 80/90, I wonder why it would happen in the 1st half and not the 2nd half. That seems counterintuitive.

I watched your defensive alignment as that particular drive unfolded. Because it's the last drive of the half, players are wearing down a bit. I didn't look at time of possession, but maybe he had a little more in the 1st half.

Anyway, if you watch that drive, you see that little by little the defenders wear out and offensive players start subbing. It gets up to 8 offensive players on the field at one point, I think.

So, Chris, we probably need to figure out if the 80/90 is causing a problem of too many guys unavailable at once.

I'm going to try to do it for one of my teams and see what happens. I run all Conditioning drills, so almost everyone starts each game at 100%. That might counteract it.

I may have to set it so you can't set Sub In that high. QB's are artificially pushed way down the list for most substitutions (I'll double check that for bugs) so if it's subbing in a QB he's just about out of options. After that is probably the K, then the third LB's girlfriend, and then the water boy.

Ive seen my (24 STAM) QB need a rest lately.

I still think the solution is 53 men rosters....

Has the NFL ever had an 53 man active roster?

The thing is, it should have recycled even tired defensive players before it ever got as far as using a QB at DE, so there has to be a bug somewhere or that QB is unusually high at DE.

His DE rating is 38, and after the internal adjustments, the code treats it as 15 for substitution purposes, so the engine had to think it was pretty desperate at this point. I'm thinking something isn't working right.

There's code that's supposed to bring players off rest even if their Sub In hasn't been reached yet, but it may be conflicting with Sub Out being so high, causing them to come in and go right back on rest before they actually make it into the formation.

The other two QBs active were even worse at DE. Vyto has some strength at least.

I tried it for a game and never had an offensive player get used on D. Sticking with it for the rest of the BPFL season to see if it kicks in at any point.

As long as he can get the sack and avoid injury, I will not be concerned. (Ignoring the fact that this is completely wrong)

Is this a recent change? I swear every reference I can find says that only 45 can suit for games (plus one emergency QB), with 8 inactive and 8 practice squad.

I went to NFL.com, and the first roster I looked at, Baltimore, shows 53 active players and 4 reserve.

It is true that only 45 can suit up for each game, though. Plus a designated emergency QB who is technically the 46th guy.

The 53 man NFL roster is only so that teams have enough players to effectively practice, only 45 may dress for a game, so the limitations are the same as what we have.
