And Matt Dobbins equals who??

September 08, 2011 at 03:45AM View BBCode

If Henry Rodriguez equals Ted Williams in winning the Triple Crown but losing the MVP race, who does Matt Dobbins equal in being the player that wins the MVP away from the Triple Crown winner??

I'll trade my 4th round pick this year in return for the 5th round pick of the first person to post the correct answer :-)

That would be Mickey Cochrane. He won the 1934 MVP over Triple Crown Winner Lou Gehrig.

Very good on Micikey Cochrane, but there's a better answer here that I'm looking for, given the analogy that has been used and the winner that we had in our league.

Is the answer then someone who had similar HR and RBI numbers to Dobbins? Kirk Gibson in 1988.

DiMaggio over Ted Williams, I think. 1947

1947 is correct!

Dimaggio over Williams is an EXCELLENT answer, even better than Cochrane, but there's still a better answer our there.

What about 1933 Chuck Klein won the NL Triple Crown, but lost the MVP vote to Pitcher Carl Hubbell. Also, Ted Williams won the AL Triple Crown in 1942 (joe Gordon) and 1947 (Joe Dimaggio) and did not win the MVP either season. He won MVP in 1946 and 1949.

Hubbell over Klein wasn't even on my radar screen, but nice one! But there's still a better analogy out there for the Rodriguez/Matt Dobbins scenario....Grey Eagle, want to take another shot at this?

Or, anyone else?

I don't see anything else offhand. Gordon over Williams has an OF and 2B involved, but I don't think Gordon was the 3rd rated second baseman; he started in the all-star game that year.

Joe Gordon it is!! A second baseman that won the MVP despite another player winning the Triple Crown in the same season.

Gordon had a decent year with 88 runs scored, 18 HR, 103 RBI, .322 avg and 79 BB. Williams on the other hand, chimed in with 141 runs scored, a league leading 36 HR, 137 RBI and .356 avg, plus 145 BB.

I can't find a reference to it now, but I recall reading somewhere that one sports writer ranked Ted 9th in the MVP race and that another (from NY) left him off the ballot completely, paving the way for Gordon.

Nice job with the Hubbell, DiMaggio and Cochrane examples, but the one I was looking for was Gordon, due to him being a secondbaseman.

Trade offer forthcoming-

You owe that offer to the Wilverines...
