shutting down for the season.

I have an excellent but old pitcher on my team. And my team is pretty much out of the race. Does it make sense to shut down this pitcher and save the innings in his arm for next season? I'm still trying to figure out some of the finer nuances to the improvements vs. player slippage thing...

It depends on how old the guy is. If he's 34 or so, shutting him down may make him retire due to lack of playing time. Guys retire if they get little playing time or if they play and they play poorly. You should only shut someone down if you are playing younger guys, trying to develop them. That's my opinion anyway.

I started playing my young guys and benched some good veterans to do so. But I don't want them to retire; I want them for next year. They've all been regulars for 120-some games. Should that be enough to keep them from retiring, or will the game look at the end of the season with more weight in deciding they're done?

It all depends on how they played and how old they are. A 34 year old with 120 games (probably 400+ at bats) who batted .200 will probably retire but if he patted .285 with 20 HRs, he'll probably stick around.
