Timing of a penalty

August 10, 2011 at 03:42PM View BBCode

The flag was flown on this play after the interception, so it seems to me that we should have kept the ball and had the penalty enforced on the runback. Is this a mistake in the way the Play-by-Play appears or in the coding?

01:36. 26 14 CAL 3/10 LV 14
3rd and 10 for the Stamp Eaters, they line up in a I Formation; the Legal Wagers line up in a 4-3.
The defense is keyed in.
Jack Jolly takes the snap and drops back into the pocket.
Jolly is under pressure.
Jolly passes to Jerome Hendren at the LV 9.
The pass intended for Jerome Hendren is intercepted by Matt Rehnquist at the LV 9.
Rehnquist breaks a tackle by Jerome Hendren.
There is a flag on the play.
Matt Rehnquist returns the interception to the LV 19.
PENALTY: LV, Holding by #28 Robin Walker, 5 yards and automatic first down.
Matt Rehnquist (CB, LV) is shaken up on the play; he will return soon.

01:30. 26 14 CAL 1/G LV 9
1st and goal for the Stamp Eaters, they line up in a Pro Set; the Legal Wagers line up in a 4-3.

The penalty takes prescedence. It is assumed to have happened before the ball was thrown. Walker may have impeded Hendren or the 1st look receiver, thus allowing the interception. Holding usually happens because the defender is getting beat.
It is a shame to lose the int. I'm sure Walker is bummed about the whole thing, but a blanket party may still be in order. :o

This is a code bug, not a play-by-play bug.

So I take this to mean that I should have kept the ball after the INT, then had the penalty applied?

That appears to be correct; although inherently I "know" this to be true I can't actually find the applicable rule in the Rulebook yet.

Reading the Rulebook is a little tricky in that section, as they use the term "running play" in a way different than you and I normally would. In the rulebook, there are multiple "plays" within a down, so the QB running around in the backfield is a "running play", then the actiual pass is a "passing play", then after the interception the defender's return is a separate "running play", so it falls under the auspices of a "running play following a turnover".
