College Players' Skills

July 29, 2011 at 01:44AM View BBCode

Will we have access to the exact skills of the college players that we will draft?

If so, that seems a bit odd. There should be some uncertainty with these things -- call it the Ki-Jana Carter/Tim Couch factor.

Some guys look great in college and have great measurable but just can't cut it in the pros. If we know the exact skill set of the guys we draft, then only a ranking blunder will cause a bust (or really bad coaching).

I guess the question, then, is this: how can their be busts if we know everything about the draftees?

The grades of the majority of this pool are better than half the guys on my roster. I can probably pick a kid in the 7th round who can step right in and win a starting job.

We had a pretty weak initial draft this time out.

College players and initial draft players are created using the exact same code.

My original plan was to have some attributes hidden but it needs more work and testing than I can give it right now, so it will be an add-on later for leagues to select if they choose to.

I would argue that all the unmeasurable skills should not be visible, or at least very vague:

Potential (totally invisible)
Execution (maybe vague)
Attitude (maybe vague, although often this is apparent)
Health (invisible)
Stamina (maybe vague)
Aggressiveness (maybe vague)

Health is tricky because NFL personnel professionals can look into a guy's past and see whether or not he missed time due to injuries...and they have to pass a rigorous physical as well...

The reason college injuries, academic suspensions and SCAA suspensions exist were to give you clues toward health, execution and attitude. Eventually a hidden version will be available, it just won't be the default.

Actually, now that I think about it, I could try a vague version with L, M, or H (Low/Medium/High) as ratings for the "soft skills" with just a couple of lines of code.

(Incidentally, this is why Potential, Health, Stamina, Attitude and Execution are grouped together on roster displays.)

OK, I've put this in place. High is B+ (68) and up; Low is C- (35) or below; Med is C, C+, B-, and B. A question mark will show for unknown items; some things become visible in the Sophomore year, some in the Junior year, and some in the Senior year.

This would get far more sophisticated later, but it's a simple start.
