Couple small changes under Edit Profile

April 23, 2004 at 07:36PM View BBCode

We added a couple small things today. You can choose your team logo under Edit Profile. We have at least 2 choices for each city. Some have 3 or 4 choices, I'm going to add more choices as Chris sends them in.

You can also change your stadium name on this page. Right now, it won't do anything. But when the next version of Dynasty Vision is ready, the new stadium name will be used.

Also, moovolong helped me fix a bug brought up today that had to do with player's ages on the depth chart page.

Very cool! You have to adjust things so that the appropriate logo shows up on the Stats pages and such.

Individual Stats and League Scores continue to show the old logo. Everything else seems to use the proper logo.

Is there any estimation of when the new Dynasty Vision will be tested?

Changed those, thanks for pointing them out. Chris keeps sending me more logos, so I'll keep putting those up there as they come in. Most of the teams have 3 now, Washington has 4 choices.

I did most of the stuff on my end today for the new Dynasty vision (which is a somewhat minor part of the overall change). Hopefully we'll have something next week, but Chris will have to give us an update.

Here are all the logos available for each city:

Right now, the stats display is working in DynastyVision. Tyson just finished the stuff I need for color commentary and simulated ball/strike counts. Nothing yet for the "live scoreboard" for other games.

Forgot about the out of town scoreboard stuff. I started working on that briefly one day and realized it would take some time to do. I'll try to work on it next week.

Very cool. I love the red Washington logo with the white W.

Chris sent me a third image for the cities that were missing one. Check them out:

Of course, now that Washington has four, I feel compelled to create a fourth for each city... :)

Some of them are completely original, like the third one for CHA, but I'm trying to keep them at least somewhat related to the real cities while still introducing variety. Philadelphia's new one, for example, uses a Bauhaus font with rounded lines similar to the 70's version of the logo, but using the color scheme from the thirties (since the other two are already red). Boston's logo is based on the logo of their Single A affiliate Augusta Greenjackets (my local team); besides, we need more green logos... :) NYA's new logo is based on an old Highlanders logo, and Milwaukee's uses a circle design common to many Negro League teams.

If anyone else takes a shot at this, there are four logos: a 64x64, a 32x32, a 24x24, and a 16x16. All are 256-color GIF's. As the logos get smaller, I tend to slightly brighten the colors to compensate for the effect that smaller objects look darker than their larger counterparts (if any of you build models, you're probably familiar with this effect). All the reductions are done at 24-bit color before being converted to 256 colors, and the 16x16 images usually need some hand-tuning after the fact or they just become a blur.

I'll bet once this feature goes over to the main site, we have some creative folks step forward that want to create their own logos.

I don't see any lines or links coming up in my Edit Profile related to these new additions.

They're right under the team name. Do you see them if you dump your browser cache?

Just to make sure we're on the same page - I'm referring to the Edit profile on the site and not the one on the message boards.

can we create our own logos? I think that would be a great feature.

No - we won't be adding that. However, see Chris's note about specifications for creating logos (its in another post somewhere). If you want to create some logos, I'll put them up on the site for everyone to use.

I like that idea. We can't do anything too similar to actual MLB logos, right? Other than that it's wide open?

Yeah - as long as its not an exact copy of the MLB logo, I'll use it.

And as long as it looks decent :) of course, I know you have talents in this area.

Tyson had the "problem" figured out. I was looking at the wrong Edit Profile page.

Or minor league logos, or college logos, or historical logos, or negro league logos... almost all are trademarked and owned by someone!

I don't want to speak for Tyson, but the criteria that I've been using is that they should all be generic enough to represent any team name, but still be identifiable. Thus, all of the logos are the letter of the city as they would appear on a hat: solid backgrounds, no really thin lines, etc. (Look at the original Washington logo and how bad it looks as it gets smaller due to the thin lines.) Remember that these get viewed as small as 16x16, no larger than 64x64, and with no more than 256 colors. Within those constraints, it gets to be really hard to come up with something interesting, especially since so many cities have the same letter: how many interesting ways can you draw a C, anyway?

And when you reduce from 64x64 to 32x32, make sure you're in 24 bit mode when you do it and go to an intermediate step first (I usually use 42) to get the smoothest reduction.

And please, no copying anything from anywhere! Let's not get Tyson sued... :D (On that note, we should probably get rid of chn2.gif and nyn2.gif, which are WAY too close for comfort!)
