Injured players at combine?

May 04, 2011 at 07:17PM View BBCode

I need an opinion here... In the run up to the draft, the realist in me wants to not display Combine results for college players who are showing as injured at draft time, but it's a bit of a pain to code and I also think it's just going to annoy people rather than make them appreciate the realism. Of course, displaying combine results for an injured player looks like an oversight or bug. What do you think? Show results for everyone or just for non-injured players?

Just for non-injured players, provided that it is crystal clear that the player was injured. Perhaps a line: Player unable to complete combine due to injury. Or something like that.

I don't know that it matters that much. Most guys on the sim don't really want too much detail.

Interesting. The Combine I figured would be useful because it helps tell the difference between grades. The 10, 20 and 40 yard numbers are ripped straight from the pursuit code in the game so they are not just abstract, they are measures of actual in-game performance.

Actually, running numbers for the Combine helped me discover and fix several bugs related to how player speed is applied, which may mean some funkiness people have reported in expected results may now be fixed as well. I had a couple of players with average speed that were just ripping down the field past supposedly faster players.

Here's what the Combine looks like for Gamma's draftees. These results have helped point out a few bugs in player creation so this crop of players will be wiped out and regenerated before we start Gamma.

(Yeah, I don't have shuttles or 3-cone drill in yet)

Also, I'm going to give teams this page for their own players, as no doubt you are having your own players perform these drills week to week. You won't be able to see other teams' results, though. (It'll just be called "Team Drill Results" rather than "Combine Results" at that point.)

Note that these numbers are not stored in the database. Each player's stats at the time of the draft are stored (so I can compare development), and those are used when looking at the Combine, as opposed to the current values which are used when viewing Team Drills. There is a slight random element to everything, of course, but these random numbers are pulled in a repeatable way. What all this means to you is that if I make adjustments to the formulas for a drill, it's retroactive. It also means there won't be any "I'd like to have these numbers tracked week to week for my players", as I anticipate that will be the first request, but I don't want to dump a lot of database space into this.

That's an awful lot of data to parse.

I hope that owners will at least be able to find some simple way to use it, because if you exclude the people who don't have heaps of time to devote that might not be good for growing the game.

Just like the real Combine, I expect most people to look at the 40 yard dash and ignore most everything else. Also, this will only be used really when people are evaluating the draft, which they'll do on their bye week or after they've been eliminated from the playoffs.

If injuries are going to be a factor in short careers or prone to injuries then maybe injured combine players should be added. After the combine, injury history will be tracked on player card notes.

You should let us set up a league and lookw at the results as you try it out. That way we could really help you with stuff.

You can see the page on your Beta team; go to Statistics / Team Drills. The Gamma league is actually created but I've had to re-run population on it a number of times and the more people that are in it, the more complicated that gets, so I'm holding till things are more stable. Hopefully sometime tomorrow; I'd hoped to get there today but I had to get away from my computer for a bit so i took a few hours off.
