Bunting Skill

As part of my quest to tackle some precursor items to stretching, I have been looking at players who bunt for a base hit.

In the sim today, this event is far too unlikely. I started digging a bit and playing with some potential changes to how bunt for base hits are calculated.

As part of this research, I took a fresh look at the formula in the Amateur Draftee population code that gives a player a bunt skill. I looked at 2 leagues and was surprised to find the average bunt skill was 30. The formula for creating this skill was kind of feast or famine, most people didn't know how to bunt but a few had really high scores.

Another aspect is that bunting doesn't improve in the sim. This might be something that gets changed eventually, but I'm not going to tackle that one yet.

So I'm adjusting the creation logic for this skill going forward. As part of this change, I'm going to make a one-time adjustment to all existing players in the database and bump their bunting skill by 20 points for everyone, max of 100.

The other way I could have handled this was to just consider 30 as average bunting in the sim, but I think long term this is more intuitive for people to see the good ratings in the same range as other good ratings.
