Individual stat dominance

Chris, I don't know if you've looked at this yet or not, but as my first season has two games left I'm noticing a whole lot of individual statistical performances that are going to push well beyond NFL records.
Passing
We have two QBs who are going to throw for 5000 yards:
[url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11579]Mendenhall[/url] is already at 5204 with two games left. My guy [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11540]Reed[/url] is at 4894. No one else is remotely close to them.
The key is that in the history of the NFL, two guys have thrown for 5000 yards in a season.
Receiving
The most receptions in an NFL season is 143, and most yards receiving is 1848.
My guy [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11766]Boone[/url] is at 128 catches, 2009 yards. Other team's best guy [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11799]Parker[/url] has 114 for 2137. But they also have [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11738]Irons[/url], with
150 catches for 1418.
Neither is close to the TD record of 23, though, nor is either passer near the NFL mark of 50 TDs.
So my best guess is the fault here isn't necessarily the amount of times they're catching the ball, just the yardage. Is it too many YAC? Not necessarily, as Parker has just 462 YAC which means he has almost 1700 before. But two guys with a combined 264 catches with two games to go? It's a lot. Maybe if we had more 4-WR sets, the catches would spread out better.
Rushing
There have been 3 guys in NFL history to run for 2000 yards. The most carries is 416.
Our league has two guys going nuts.
[url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11681]Rutledge[/url] already has 460 totes for 1746 yards, so he has a shot at 2000 for sure.
[url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11617]Gill [/url] has a staggering
550 carries and
2211 yards, with two games left. Decent chance he gets over 600 carries, 2500 yards.
I don't have all the answers, but I think these individual skill players either need a lot more rest or some greater injury risk if overused. The problem is that we aren't calling plays for these specific RB and WR, so we can't be held specifically responsible as owners.
I'm not even trying to game the system. I'm trying to take advantage of a good passing game, but my starting RB has about 1000 yards rushing. I'm not throwing deep every down or anything like that. I'm trying to run a smart offense that works.
Ideas, folks?

Well, adjustments were made midstream that would keep these sorts of numbers from happening again. In addition, I am beefing up some defensive options against the short pass.
You are right in that the play selection being limited has a lot to do with it. The best thing I can do is be fast and flexible with changes, and the best you all can do is to keep me honest and help me see when I get things wrong.
I thionk things like the "spectacular catch" option leads to more realistic results in the long run; I've found that football statistics can be very misleading when you look at them in terms of averages because each play is so different.
To some extent, though, I expect there to be some higher numbers here than in the NFL because owners here won't have the same pressure to play conservatively.
I need to start rolling out a way to target things better; I know I keep talking about ideas for the future but some things can't wait for the future.

Maybe its defense that needs the adjustment. In my two teams I have Heavy Pressure on the opposition 80% of total pass plays, but seems to have little influence on the game. Like I've said before, it makes no sense at this point to construct a team around defense.

Are we having too many plays per game? Just by sheer volume of snaps we may be generating statistics that are too high.

(At a cursory glance, my suggestion does not seem to be the problem. Looks like our average plays per game is in the 120-140 range total, which is about right.)

And most scores are not all that high in my league. In many cases, defense is winning.

I have some adjustments in that I'm working on for that.

Well that's another issue. Yards are high but scores are low. I think the answer there is that the average play needs to be smaller but there need to be more big plays. The "spectacular catch" is a step in that direction, I need something similar for the ground attack.

In the Peyton Manning Football League there are at least 3 WRs who will amass 2000+ yards receiving before the end of the season. The all-time NFL mark is 1848. And in NFL history only 25 times has a WR passed 1500. I've also noticed that RB season totals are also inflated.
There are a few ways to deal with these inflated numbers:
*Add restrictions within each game to make it more difficult for individual players to go beyond certain yards gained.
*Add more distribution within each game (passing to other players a little more often, handing off to the full back a little more).
*Have a season long fatigue penalty, like in simbaseball, with innings pitched.
*Have less amazing players in the draft. In the Peyton Manning Football League, more than half the teams have a WR with 1500+ yards. There's just too much talent out there. The 1500+ yard WR and RB should be uncommon.

That becomes a double edged sword, one of the earliest complaints was that the FB got the ball too much. With passing it's easier to spread things around but harder on the ground. I think with the latest fatigue changes the RB numbers should come back to earth. Also, I'm thinking of giving the defense a "big hit" option for the strong, aggressive guys that is more likely to result in a shaken RB/WR.

I hadn't thought of this... hm. Right now fatigue resets after each game, but if a huge number of carries carried over into the next game's Conditioning, you'd eventually have to sit him. I'd have to change the way Conditioning drills work, though.

Talent is all relative. It's not the players, it's about balancing the engine. There has to be enough room for owners to run heavy pass or run offenses but a way to keep them in check if it gets abused. The problem with putting ceilings on things, though, is that you lose differentiation between the good players and the great players and it all becomes a random number fest.
It is worth remembering that this season's numbers are tainted by the early problems with the engine. There were similar problems early in Baseball's history; I remember a season where several teams had games with triple-digit scores.
I just found an issue that makes the Prevent far les effective against the long pass than it should be; I'm also giving high-Execution defensive backs an interception bonus, similar to the "spectacular catch" that the WR's get now.
