Clock Issues

February 20, 2011 at 02:15AM View BBCode

I had a couple of issues come up in todays game. Here is the first one at the end of the third quarter.

00:18. 24 17 CAR --- POR 30 Portland lines up for the kickoff.
Al Rudolph kicks off for the Sea Dogs.
Kick hang time: 3.78 seconds.
The ball is caught in the end zone by Ken Parros and downed for a touchback.
00:08 24 17 CAR 1/10 CAR 20 1st and 10 for the Bulls, they line up in a Pro Set; the Sea Dogs line up in a 4-3.
Time expires before the snap.
00:00 24 17 CAR --- CAR 20 End of 3rd quarter.
Portland Sea Dogs 24, Carolina Bulls 17

The ball is kicked off with 18 seconds remaining and is downed in the end zone with no return. The clock shows 8 seconds remaining and then the time runs out in the third quarter before the next play. The clock should not be running after a change of possesion.

Issue #2 came at the end of the game involving timeouts.

00:53. 31 24 POR 1/10 POR 19 1st and 10 for the Sea Dogs, they line up in a I Formation; the Bulls line up in a 4-3.
Tom Rucker takes the snap, hands off to Homer Sansen.
Homer Sansen runs up the middle for a short gain.
Chalmers Koegel (LB, CAR) is shaken up on the play; he will return soon.
The Carolina Bulls call a time out. They have 2 remaining.
00:48. 31 24 POR 2/9 POR 20 2nd and 9 for the Sea Dogs, they line up in a I Formation; the Bulls line up in a 4-3.
Tom Rucker takes the snap, hands off to Homer Sansen.
Homer Sansen runs up the middle for a 4 yard gain.
The Carolina Bulls call a time out. They have 1 remaining.
00:43. 31 24 POR 3/5 POR 24 3rd and 5 for the Sea Dogs, they line up in a I Formation; the Bulls line up in a 4-3.
Tom Rucker takes the snap, hands off to Homer Sansen.
Homer Sansen runs up the middle for a 1 yard gain.
Time expires before the next play.
00:00 31 24 POR --- POR 25 End of game.
Portland Sea Dogs 31, Carolina Bulls 24

On this one, I just can't figure out why the Bulls wouldn't call a timeout after the third down when they did after the first and second.

The timeout issue can just be a mistake on the settings by my part but the clock running after a change of possesion is something that should be fixed.

Actually this is my settings for timeouts on defense, so there should of been a timeout called after the third down stop on defense.

On defense, call a time out:

At the end of the half, when there is between 30 and 100 seconds remaining and behind by 7 or less.
At the end of the game, when there is between 1 and 119 seconds remaining and behind by 7 or less.

Accoring to the NFL rulebook, the time is restarted after a kickoff return except in the last 2 minutes of the first half and the last 5 minutes of the second half.

I may have an error in the timeouts, I will take a look.

The clock is never started after a kickoff or any other change of possesion.

Chris here are the rules based on the page you provided in the other thread.

"Clock will start running when ball is snapped following all changes of team possession."
"With the exception of the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half, the game clock will be restarted following a kickoff return, a player going out of bounds on a play from scrimmage, or after declined penalties when appropriate on the referee?s signal."

The first one clearly states the clock starts running on the snap of the next play.
The second states that the game clock will be restarted on the referee's signal.

The referee's signal is "after declined penalties when appropriate", meaning in circumstances where the clock would have continued running. See http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/timing .

With all due respect Chris I believe you are mistaken. The referee's signal is for all three of those events.

The clock is always stopped after a change of possesion as indicated by the rule above the one you are refrencing. The referee will signal for the clock to begin when they comeback from a tv timeout, since the nfl usually goes to a commercial break after changes of possesion.

When a player goes out of bounds, the clock is always stopped. It stays stopped during the last 2 minutes and 5 miutes of the halves until the next snap, but will restart on the referee's signal before those times. Usually after they spot the ball.

The last one is self explanatory.
