game play intermitantly gives wrong yardage needed for 1st down
February 20, 2011 at 01:34AM View BBCode
i was watching the game play and noticed that sometimes the yardage was not correctly called out..
http://football.simdynasty.com/boxscore.jsp?boxscoreid=4676&thid=476
sometimes a player on 1st and 10 would run 2 yards, the SIm would say its now 2nd and 7.. which it should be 2nd and 8!!!.
this happened a few times during the game.. in the 4th Quarter you will see 3 plays by my team that were losses of yards and they didnt add correctly!!

The explanation I've seen for this is that the sim actually breaks down every play down to tenths of a yard. So there will be discrepancies on things like that because it's not always moving one full yard at a time.
I will concede, though, that if it's 1st and 10 and the sim says you went 2 yards, it should be 2nd and 8.
In other words, it should match up still.

Like red said though, if its 1st and 10 and it says you went 2 yards, even with the tenths of a yard measurements theres still no reason for it to say anything other than 2nd and 8. It shouldnt be happening when a ball is exactly on a yard line to start the play.

I'm going to offer a perspective from my days as a reporter for high school football games where I had to keep running stats.
The primary rule was always be true to the concept of 100 yards down the field. If a 1st-down play goes for "about" 4 yards, you mark it as 4 yards and call the next one 2nd-and-6. Even if the nose of the ball is darn close to making it 5 to go, and the next play goes exactly enough for another 1st down ... that has to be called 6 yards.
So while it's great that the game knows the spot to a fraction of a yard, it should never affect yardage totals and distance. It's almost as if the sim is calculating the same yardage twice. First it decides the run went for 3 yards, but then it measures again and says 2nd-and-6.
I think something can be fixed here to make it consistent.

Units .5 of a yard or more are rounded up, units less than .5 of a yard are rounded down. Yardlines likewise are rounded at their midpoint. The exception is the area between the goal line and halfway to the 1 yard line, which is reported as the 1 yard line rather than the goal line. "To Go" distances shorter than half a yard are reported as "inches".
05:09. 6 10 CLE 1/10 CLE 42
Buck Blandin runs up the left for a 1 yard gain.
04:58 6 10 CLE 2/8 CLE 43
Curtis Darre runs up the right for a 3 yard gain.
Something like this makes no sense according the rounding explanation. The run had to be 1.4 or less or it would have been rounded up to 2. So how does a 1.4 run on 1st and 10 become a 2nd and 8?
Looks like the play is being rounded down at first from 1.5 to 1 then being rounded up from 1.5 to 2 to calculate the yards to go

11:05 ROC 1/10 ROC 46 1st and 10 for the Reapers, they line up in a Pro Set; the Methadoners line up in a 4-3.
Somethings obviously wrong, a 2 yard gain, 4 yard gain and 2 yard gain somehow manages to get a 1st down. Even if they were 2.5, 4.5 and 2.5 thats only 9.5 yards, even at .6 each its still not 10 yards

It looks like "gain/loss" is not being rounded the same as "to go/yard line". "Gain/loss" is using a simple "floor", so 1.9 is reported as 1. Fixing this will be retroactive, so any existing box scores will show the correction (as the database is storing tenths of a yard, this is a display error).
This will not completely avoid rounding issues, of course, but should reduce them.

Anthony Sokowski takes the snap, hands off to Art Caldwell.
Art Caldwell runs up the left for a 5 yard gain.
11:33 14 16 ROC 3/3 ROC 43 3rd and 3 for the Reapers, they line up in a I Formation; the Methadoners line up in a 4-3.
