How to play Defense
February 17, 2011 at 11:16PM View BBCode
I focused heavily on defense and drafted top rated defenders at many positions on defense yet my defense got torched in week one for nearly 500yds... I focus on a balanced def with a tendency towards stopping the run. Any ideas on how to improve the game stats defensively?

Your defense has a ton of talent all over the place. Weaknesses are: your 3rd and 4th LB's and your defensive backfield has below average Execution scores all around. I think that your weakness is your passing defense, which is where you were preyed upon in game 1. If I were you I would change my approach to try to defend against the pass and force teams to try to run it against me to win. With your offensive line you should be able to run it right back and play a very slow and methodical style.

I thought Chris said that defensive backs aren't using the execution variable, only receivers? Im sure eventually he will work it in, but I'm not using execution to value my DB's right now.

The DB Execution skill wasn't listed in an answer to a specific question about the INT calculations. Jumping, Agility, Hands, Catch are used for both and WR's use EXE while DB use Aggressiveness. (I think I'm remembering that correctly, I'm sure someone will point out where I'm wrong.)
Execution relates to every position. It is basically "how well can this player do what I ask him to do?" I don't know how much of a factor it is, but I know that it matters everywhere.

If I focus on the pass I get killed with the run... I can't seem to find a happy medium. And I still gave up 136 rushing while focusing on stopping the run...

Here is what Chris said in another thread. Unless I'm reading this wrong I think you are overstating the importance of execution at this point. In the future it will be much more intertwined, but now it hasnt been implemented in enough places to give it a ton of weight. It looks like the only place execution is used for DB's is YAC if Im not mistaken.
----------------
Execution is factored in in the following ways:
- At any time, when a player's ratings are requested by the engine, a high Execution score may allow fatigue to be ignored for that request
- Execution is used by placekickers to compensate for wind, and on field goal attempts, some kicks that would fall short are given a "boost"
- Execution is used along with Hands to determine if a holder gets a good hold (Hands is weighted twice as high as Execution)
- Execution is used by punters along with Accuracy when a coffin-corner kick is necessary
- Execution is used by kick returners when following rules whether to let a punt drop or to down a kick; these rules are specified by yard line and Execution determines how accurate they are on determining where the ball will land
- Execution is used by kickers (along with Accuracy, weighted equally) on onside kicks to attempt to pop the ball into the air and how close to the target line they get (lower Execution/Accuracy are more likely to have a kick come up short or go out of bounds, or right into the hands of the receiving team)
- Execution (along with Hands) is used by Hands Team members on both sides in recovering loose onside kicks (this is true in any loose ball situation) Hands is solely used for continued muffing, making Hands effectively weighted twice as high as Execution for loose-ball situations
- Execution is used along with Kick Return (Kick Return weighted twice as high) for the transition from catching to running in a kick return; the smoother this transition is made, the better jump the returner can get on the defenders before he has to go into evasion mode
- Execution (along with Aggressiveness) is the main indicator for most penalties
- Execution is a factor on the offensive side of receptions (receiver uses Catching, Jumping and Execution, defense uses Catching, Jumping and Pass Cover)
- Execution is used by both receiver and defender in the transition from catch to run, affecting potential YAC
I will no doubt use Execution in other places, but this gives you and idea about how and when I use it.

I feel for you cardfan, I'm not focusing on defense as much as you did and my roster isn't anywhere near yours in terms of general talent, but it looks to me that theyr'e not so far off in run coverage. Anyway, we got asphalted by [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=20015]THIS GUY[/url] in week one. Since he's clearly not a monster (B- in BrkT?), anyone has some tips on how should I coach my defense to avoid further humiliation?
Here's [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/roster.jsp?teamid=245]my roster[/url].
thanx
