East/West divisions

This looks like something that needs work. from an outside observer, it looks like ABE first randomly selects which teams are in which conference, and then decides on which division teams are in.

results might be more satisfactory if ABE first decided which 8 teams are in the West and which are in the east, and *then* decide which conference they are in.

It's not random. Each city has a conference "affinity" that makes it more likely to show up in a particular conference, so if you were to pick 16 NFL cities that are evenly split between NFC and AFC, they will end up matching their real-life conferences. The cities that are not NFL cities are assigned to conferences but have a weaker affinity, so they may change sides if necessary to make the alignments work. Finally, the divisions are set geographically, but again there are some affiniities to make certain teams want to "stick" to certain divisions to match the NFL (since the NFL itself is not perfect geographically). (This only really affects 32 team leagues, but it makes everything fall into placeif a 32 team league is created with real NFL cities.)

Thus, if you throw the exact same set of cities into three different leagues, they will all align exactly the same.

i see. that explains it. i am not familiar enough with the NFL to know what teams are in which conference or division.

in the Peyton Manning Football League Buffalo is in an eastern division and Rochester is in the western division. that is somewhat acceptable, because they are in different conferences. but within the same conference, Rochester is in the west while Detroit is in the east.
