Starting a new test league
January 23, 2011 at 08:26PM View BBCode
We will be starting a new test league with the same participants.
Please go to Team Sign Up from the Owner menu while logged into your Alpha team. I don't have the initial draft pages up yet but working on them as fast as I can. You should be able to switch back and forth between your Alpha team and the new team just like you do in baseball. This will be a single season league.

I want to be in the same division as TwoRoosters, he killed me last season and I want a chance for redemption. Are the cities assigned to leagues/divisions after the league fills, or would I be able to pick a specific city and be paired against that football fiend? :)

The divisions and conferences are assigned automatically but not randomly.
Each city has a pre-determined "conference affinity" that determines what conference they
should be in, but if the cities aren't evenly split between AFC and NFC, those with a lower affiinity for the conference with too many teams would switch affinities. The LA and NY teams have the highest affinity to force them to always be in the conference they have the initials for. In an 8-team league, the four with the highest affinity in each conference would never switch.
Divisions are decided geographically; the sim has the latitude and longitude of each city (for the weather model) and uses that for the geographical split. Hoiwever, certain cities have a "division affinity" to make them prefer a particular division if available. Why? Because if you are setting up a 32-team league and pick all the real-life NFL cities, this allows all the cities to fall automatically into their real-life divisions and conferences.
tworoosters selected Las Vegas. Las Vegas has a fairly low affinity, which makes ith one of the cities more likely to jump conferences. Your best chance of forcing your way into the same conference and division is to take Portland.
The league is not arranged into divisions and conferences until it is filled, so city changes before the last team enters the league will be taken into account; city changes after the league will not result in a reorganization, though.
Here are all the city conference and (where present) division affinities:
Los Angeles, -66, West
New York, -64, East
Oakland, -62, West
British Columbia, -62,
Houston, -60, South, Central
Indianapolis, -58, South
Jacksonville, -56, South
Kansas City, -54, West
Tennessee, -52, South
San Diego, -50, West
Miami, -48, East
Pittsburgh, -46, North, Central
New England, -44, East
Denver, -42, West
Buffalo, -40, East
Baltimore, -38, North
Cincinnati, -36, North, Central
Cleveland, -34, North, Central
Phoenix, -30,
Michigan, -28,
Baton Rouge, -26,
Charlotte, -24,
Calgary, -22,
San Jose, -22,
Newark, -20,
Syracuse, -18,
Edmonton, -18,
Providence, -16,
Orlando, -14,
Shreveport , -12,
Las Vegas, -12,
Saskatchewan, -10,
Portland, -8,
Tulsa, -6,
Toledo, -4,
Arkansas, -3,
San Antonio, 2,
Florida, 4,
Anaheim, 8, West
Birmingham, 8,
Norfolk, 8,
Milwaukee, 10,
Louisville, 12,
Brooklyn, 14,
Nashville, 16,
Sacramento, 18,
New Jersey, 20,
Hamilton, 21,
Rochester, 21,
Boston, 24,
Montreal, 26,
Winnipeg, 28,
Memphis, 28,
Colorado, 30,
Dallas, 32, East
Toronto, 32,
Chicago, 34, North, Central
Carolina, 36, South
Atlanta, 38, South
Detroit, 40, North, Central
Philadelphia, 42, East
Minnesota, 44, North, Central
New Orleans, 46, South
San Francisco, 48, West
Seattle, 50, West
St. Louis, 52, West
Tampa Bay, 54, South
Green Bay, 56, North, Central
Washington, 58, East
Arizona, 60, West
Los Angeles, 62, West
New York, 64, East
(Negative numbers represent AFC affinity, positive are NFC. The numbers with the highest absolute values (farthest from zero) are more likely to end up in that conference.)
North, Central, and South divisions are not used in a 16 team league so they can be ignored. If tworoosters is cooperating and willing to relocate, Los Angeles (AFC) and Oakland should always appear in the same division on the AFC side and Arizona and Los Angeles (NFC) should always appear in the same division on the NFC side.

Sure, that would work. I'll take Carolina or Tampa Bay or somewhere else with similar affinity. Thanks!

And after all that, New Orleans and Carolina ended up in different divisions. Green Bay is a smidge farther east than New Orleans so it got the last East Division slot. I should have expected that and relocated Atlanta out West. I looked at both cities having a South affinity and didn't worry about it but South is only used in 32-team leagues.

In the future, when we start doing "private single season" leagues, I think I'm going to have to devise a way for people to request a particular division.
