The Cost of Victory - ASL 1950

September 03, 2010 at 04:20PM View BBCode

The recently completed initial regular season is in the books for the ASL so how much did each win cost ?

Well there was a wide variance, from a high of $958,675 per win (Seattle) to a low of $413,091 (San Francisco) .

There were no true Cinderella stories as all four playoff teams spent in excess of $70 million but St. Louis were a revelation winning 96 games with a team payroll of only $52 million ($541,979 per win).

Overall the average cost of a win was $699,698 and only 2 teams, St. Louis and Detroit were able to play .500 baseball with a team salary less than $60 million .

The cost per win per team: (wins), Bold indicates made post season

Seattle (83) - $958,675
CHN (80) - $901,570
Tampa Bay (88) - $825,909

OK, this data is awesome. Can we please have a "Finances" section of the site with this type of information? (Eventually)

It could be automatically calculated and show things like average cost per win, cost-benefit player analysis, etc.

I think the ASL data is a little odd due to the "orphan" teams but I had 20 minutes this morning so thought it would be interesting to look at , though I'm not sure what to make of it at this point .

I wonder what the TSL data from last season looked like, but I don't have everyone's end of season salaries to run the numbers with.

I think that if you looked at this data over time (3+ years) that it would show trending as it relates to general manager's ability to judge talent and manage costs effectively.

And good contracts. I love me some undervalued players.

(dear Billy Beane, if you're reading this, I'd love to work for you)

Beane might go for it, after all you did miss the playoffs .
