Simming Through the Playoffs and Moving San Diego

October 16, 2009 at 11:42PM View BBCode

I'm going to sim the entire playoffs right now.

I'd like to move San Diego to a new city between the end of the WS and when the OffSeason runs so I can document any problems/issues that come out of this. I can see if those issues can be overcome, which would pave the way for owners to change the city of their teams.

I'd like to see you move San Diego to a city that's already existed in the league, as I suspect that's where problems will occur. Perhaps Los Angeles.

I moved them to St Louis.

I'd be happy to let Texas move back to Detroit if you need another team to test on.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind - the OffSeason already ran though. So maybe I'll move you after a few seasons.

Ok, here's the list I have so far:

1) When looking at pages like the standings page, draft results, etc. for prior seasons, the new city is used instead of the old one. This is not dissimilar to how it works when you change your team nickname.

2) For players who were on this team last year, their stat line says SD which is technically correct but results in them being considered to be on a new team for Retirement purposes. I will fix this.

3) Team cap and names are going to be incorrect for past years. So if a guy from this franchise was in the leaders area, it is going to say St. Louis. This is the same for cap on the player card. Again, this isn't dissimilar to what happens when you change the team nickname.

Some other things that aren't problems on beta since the data here is all relatively new:

4) For the team on the allstar page for really old results *it might* show the wrong city name. On the individual stats page, it might show the wrong players for really old seasons. But I don't think it would, due to a change we made a couple years back on how this is looked up.

I'm going to assume that the rest of the league won't care about 1, 3, and 4 and that the owner moving the franchise would have to decide whether they care about these as well. There isn't an easy way to address these without a major overhaul.

Let me know what else you see or think of.

Tworoosters, I'll move your team before the next offseason.

Thanks,
Tyson

Ok, I'm moving you back to Detroit. Let me know if you see any problems after I run the OffSeason.

Thanks,

Well the stats have all followed but the Texas Southern Stars have been wiped off the face of the earth.

Was that supposed to happen ?

Yes, here's what I noticed:

Tyson at this point is it basically impossible to have a team who is moved keep their stats on pages like league leaders? Also on the standings page?

I'm guessing a major overhaul would be required to make that possible.

Yeah, it would be a major overhaul and probably not backwards compatible, meaning after we write all the code it would only work going forward. It would probably also slightly slow down every page on the site, by how much, I'm not sure. Maybe only a millisecond or two. The reason is that we'd need to look one more thing up every time we display a team name.

Although congruence to the past is important, wouldn't it be worth it to have for the future? (huge overhaul aside) To me if I joined a new league and stayed in it for 100 years, I'd be curious to see what teams were owned where and so on. Speed on the other hand I supposed would be a real issue people would complain about.

Just thoughts.

You could see all that Corey, just not in the case where an existing team was moved to a new city. These tests are to see whether that is a possibility.

My thoughts are that if the owner and league can live with these minor inconveniences, we would allow an owner to change the city of his team.

Currently, we do not allow such a move.

I understand that but it seems like there are a lot of places in the BRL (i notice it most here because I spend my time here more) where it will list guys from the 1950's under my team nickname. I know you said that this is a similar problem, so I wasn't sure if the overhaul would fix that as well.

It seems to me like it is one of those fixes that would be really nice to have, but is not worth it due to the man hours required. I mean to spend 10 (random number) hours rewriting code so that when i look at league leaders from 100 years ago the team nickname is correct seems a bit unjust.

But I do understand that when you move your team when you enter the league, one might not care that the past records are changed. Like you said its similar to changing the nickname. It is most likely worth it if a replacement team had that option I think.

No, this thread isn't to tackle that problem. That is a separate problem/topic.

Unfortunately, it would probably be much more than that and it would only work going forward - so the next time you changed the team nickname it would look okay 100 years from now.
