Home Field Advantage
October 14, 2009 at 10:43PM View BBCode
Based on some research, the home field advantage isn't as great in Sim Dynasty as it should be. We are at .511 and should be around .534.
Currently, the visiting pitchers lose one point in Control and Velocity. I've also made it so that the visiting players lose one point in batting, speed, and defense.
I'll re-examine this in January and see how this affects the home field advantage in the sim and make further adjustments if necessary.

hmm, how many standard deviations was .511 from .534? I'm not sure it was off enough to warrant an adjustment but I suppose we can see how this turns out.

It might prove significant in playoffs, where teams with home field advantage are frequently those that have big division leads and lose the LCS ... thus drawing much outrage on the boards.

Given the sample size, I think it must be significant. When I looked at the math a month ago, Sim Dynasty home teams were 165,180 - 157,995.
Looking at the playoffs, I didn't see any difference in results in MLB data between the regular season. .534 seems to be the right number in my opinion for both playoffs and regular season.
You can read more about my playoff data, among other things, here:

One thing I'm going to look at today is this penalty as it relates to mentoring scores. I think it shouldn't be used to calculate mentoring score, and I may adjust it so that Speed and catcher are are left out so that it doesn't have an effect on the stealing preferences.

Ok, I've changed this up slightly.
Instead of the away team losing batting and pitching points, I've made it so the home team gains batting and pitching points. This way, your mentoring score can only increase because of this - which we probably won't get any complaints about vs. the other way around.
I've also removed Speed from the equation - speed won't get a bump at home. This way you don't go from B+ to A- and have it effect stealing prefs. This might be overly cautious, I don't know.

Has any thought been given to customizing the ballparks for each team. Home field advantage could come from customizing one's team to fit the ballpark.

It's a fairly popular idea:

Is this change to homefield adv in the regular sim now or is it only in the beta?

Only Beta. All changes are done in Beta first.

It's obviously a great idea but balancing it is the issue. Several different formulas have been bandied about over the years but all will require a lot of work and balancing to get right.

Has anyone looked at the numbers on how the home field advantage was modified?
The Chicago home stats this year so far are 52-25, where the road record is 37-41. I could not figure out a way to look at the previous years head to head standings.
