Pinch hitters getting credit for defense
April 02, 2009 at 07:50PM View BBCode
I've put in a couple changes so that if a player is a pinch hitter, but doesn't actually play in the field (like the team's last at bats) he won't get credit for playing in the field - either for position conversions or just the tally for games played per position.
Please help me keep an eye on this and see if the fix works.

This appears to be working except that it isn't noting PH games on the "positions" page of the player card.
For example [url=http://beta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=21129&statsorimps=pos]Ferreira[/url] has pinch hit 5 times through the first 16 games yet his positions card shows 0.

Hmmm, maybe I should change the label to say P? I'm not sure if it's important to see how many games a guy PH in... what do others think?

Personally I've always liked the "PH" column, just for symmetry.
The P part appears redundant to me as only pitchers can pitch.

The reason the column said PH or P was because these PH appearances sometimes show up and count as games. It actually wasn't accurate, he may have ph for other players besides the pitcher. It just showed how many times he PH for the pitcher.
Every player in the sim has a position associated with him. So if a player phs for a position player, his position becomes say 5 for 3B. The code that awarded credits for learning a new position (and also shows on this page) would increment 3B by 1 when this happened, even if he never got to play in the field. When a player PHs for the pitcher, he gets a position of 1. So I made this column on that page say PH or P as a catch-all. But with the recent changes, this doesn't get credited anymore since he doesn't appear in the field.
I'm tempted to ax the column all together. Thoughts?

I think it is more useful to see it as PH and how many times a person PH but did not play out in the field. It will then give you an idea how your PH rules are being used.

Problem is, I can't do that without re-introducing the other problems - and it wasn't accurate to begin with anyhow. It just showed how many times he PH for the pitcher.

I kinda liked this bug the way it was because it made players multiple-position-eligible faster :)
The perception of PH/P is that it is any PH, not just for the P. Can this column be axed and a new one created that is (total games played minus [games played at a non-PH position)?

I do like seeing how my players' games add up, and a PH column does that.
However. A bigger issue to me is one that doesn't come up too often, but can be a real pain: if the PH column has the greatest number, it can prevent a guy from switching positions. (Say you decided to switch him late in the season, maybe, and he already had a lot of PH appearances.) That's a real bummer.
If, by chance, killing the PH column also happens get rid of this other occasional annoyance, I'm even more okay with said killing. (I realize that changing the display might not get rid of the problem; that's why I say "if.")

Thanks for the help in thinking this through. I think I figured out how to handle this. I'll just take total games - games played at each position, and that should equal PH.
