Player Card Layout

January 24, 2009 at 10:42AM View BBCode

I am still tinkering with the top portion of the player card. I've come up with a layout that I think is a little easier to read, but I wanted to get some opinions before I tore apart the code.

Here's a mockup of it in Excel:

Boy, that's a big change. Lots to take in, so I'm not sure how well I can comment just yet.

The season at a glance is a nice idea; often, that's the main information I'm looking for, and it doesn't make sense to have to scroll all the way down. Good thought.

I guess one thing I'll mention is the layout of the offensive abilities. I've grown accustomed to the current arrangement. How would this work:
CvR -- CvL
PvR -- PvL
Spd -- Bunt

I guess what I'm thinking is, you could just look down the left column and see what are the three most important ratings for most hitters.

Personally, I'd rather see OBP featured than SLG, but it's a close one. Maybe OPS. Or both OBP and SLG, and leave off SB. I don't know. I do like featuring BA, HR, and RBI -- the traditional stats. Makes it feel more like a card.

Question: what's the Status line for? Active/injured? Something like that?

Overall, redoing the cards is a good instinct. Whatever you do will take some geting used to. I hope these few scattered thoughts are useful to you.

Looks good to start but I would prefer to see more stats if they could be included without problem. I love the positions section easy to tell where eligible without hitting more links.

Easier to read, (more info at one spot), no scrolling required.

Question - Can the background headline color be adjusted to your team colors?

I agree with scooter's suggestions.

If I had to choose, I would replace SLG with OPS at the top. I think leaving SB is a nice idea.

--If a player has multiple positions, will those all appear on the top right?

--Will the injured designation across the card still come up?

--Do you need to add something to allow name changes?

Howdy, I love it. I agree OPS is more useful than SLG but I seem to use OBP a lot. Actually I would like all 3 SLG, OBP, OPS.... Bryce

Status would show as:

Active
Rest
Minors
Desig. for Assignment
DL
Retired
Deceased

I'd prefer "Inactive" to "Rest" but I'm afraid that might be confusing.

I would make sure the player ratings are color coded like they always have been. Other than that it's just a change that would take some getting used to.

They will be, I just didn't feel like doing it for the mockup... LOL

I wondered if that were the case. I was just making sure.

Oh, and when the player retires, or if it's the offseason/preseason and no games have been played, "Season at a Glance" changes to "Career at a Glance".

Here's the mockup with some changes:

This is really nice. It wouldn't take me long to adjust, and it makes a lot more sense to new owners.

What's the "watch list"?

It's something I'm working on, essentially a "favorites list" for players you want to keep an eye on. Someone asked for it ages ago and it's been on my "To Do" list.

You know to be honest about it I feel like I like how the current cards match the look and feel of the site. I don't know that I would call these new cards an improvement. They're just different.

There's also a problem with the white writing at the top of the cards. I'm sure you're fixing it. I think some kind of border would be helpful.

Yes, I'm slowly converting the cards over.

I could make the old style cards available as an option... I just find it really hard to locate information on the old card.

I would definitely call it an improvement. Grouping the different ratings under logical headers makes it easier to immediately see what you're looking for, season at a glance is a great idea, and I especially like the OS age being shown. It may not be perfect stylistically as far as colors and things like that, but once it's put on the card I think it will blend in better than what it looks like here. I also like the idea of matching the header colors to the team colors.

That was based on the posted Excel layout, btw. The layout currently on the beta page would have definitely need some tweaking if it was the proposed final product.

Yeah, I suppose I'm just used to the old ones so I don't have any problems with them. What would be really sweet would be if there was a tab to show any places the player ranks in the top 20 in league history.

No, but all of the position ratings are visible in the bottom left of the card.

Yes.

Name changes work the same way they always have. If you are within your window, the name field will be editable and there will be a "Change" button next to it. Also, when within your window, a link will apper below the portrait allowing you to change that.

Here's a screenshot showing the name when it is editable. I did manage to get the card to change colors to match the team.

As you can see, stats aren't working yet. That's going to take a much bigger reworking of the code than I thought so it may be a couple of days.

I like that you added number of CPs assigned, and I am madly in love with the fact you added OS age. That's just inspired.

Also, this third mockup feels, I think, more like Sim Dynasty (I had a similar reaction to Dwight's but couldn't articulate it). Dunno if it's just the new header, or if the colors have something to do with it. But this last example looks really swell, say I.

Can we give them a uniform number ?
celamantia

January 25, 2009 at 08:10PM View BBCode

I had thought about it but if they have it I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I'd have to deal with uniform number conflicts during trades, etc. But it's a good thought; I'll see what Tyson thinks.
