Improving Minor Leaguers

September 10, 2002 at 09:15PM View BBCode

Is anyone else seeing a lack of minor league improvements? In 15 games this season, I've had two guys improve. One was in the first game and the other was a guy who I had assigned zero points. I'm trying to develop three players. Two are pitchers ages 18 and 23 (I expect less improvement out of these guys because they are pitchers) and one is a 22 year old outfielder (no improvements thus far). Is anybody else seeing this or am I just unlucky?

I think you're just unlucky -- I've seen normal improvements from my guys.

Still going. 18 games and I've had two improvements (1st game and then a guy I had zero coaching points assigned to).

21 games and counting. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with having two injured guys. There seem to be a few issues about injured guys not being injured or something. It's so frustrating when your guys just don't improve.

I don't know what to tell you -- it just sounds like you're having a bad streak. One thing: I don't think players improve while they are injured. It doesn't sound like that's your problem, but I thought I would mention it just in case.

The improvements are slower to come for the older minor-leaguers, correct? So for the 22 and 23 year olds, I'm guessing those might be somewhat sporadic anyway? Not sure.

UPDATE!!!!

FINALLY AN IMPROVEMENT!!!!!

It's very frustrating when you have an 18 year old pitcher who you've assigned 5 coaching points to and he hasn't improved at all yet. How is this kid supposed to get better?

Pitchers take a lot longer than position players. I had a pitcher last season with 4 CP all season, he improved 6 times.

Basically if the kid is 20+ he has to have Vel or Con where you want it and the other with a bad rating. Then you stick him with 4 or 5 CP and hope and pray you'll have a good pitcher in 3 to 4 seasons.

Right now I have a 20 year old with D in both Vel and Con, he's just taking up space (that bench sometimes likes to run away) until there's someone better to replace him with. I'm not even going to waste a CP on him.

I'm getting an improvement every game or so...lots so far. Don't know why I'm getting so many.

Just to compare, I'm averaging about 2 every 5 games.
