Draft Population code

September 28, 2007 at 03:49PM View BBCode

I made a few changes to the way new players are created.

First off, I've changed catchers to make it so they always have at least an arm of 40 (which is a solid C). That's a simple, but powerful change.

Also, When I initially wrote the player creation stuff, I used 20th century data to decide whether players should hit left, right, or switch, and whether they should throw left or right. For example, for 2B the historical MLB data from the 20th century looks like this:

Throws Left, Bats Left: 2.8%
Throws Left, Bats Right: 0.1%
Throws Left, Bats Switch: 0.1%
Throws Right, Bats Left: 14.8%
Throws Right, Bats Right: 69.0%
Throws Right, Bats Switch: 15.6%

These were the numbers I used in creating 2B. What I generally found for C, 2B, 3B, and SS is that in MLB history there were some guys that threw left handed. But they tended to either not be regulars at the position, or they played in like 1902. Someone may be able to find me an outlier to that, but likely not in the last 20 years.

For these reasons, I've set all the lefty throwing percentages to 0% for these positions and reallocated the percentages to the righty throwing spots.

Probably a cosmetic change more than anything else, but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

NOW the real question: If I try to make my LH-throwing prospect a 3b in the minor leagues, does ABE know how to pick that up and say, "Oh no you don't!"

Not yet.

I've decided to let these changes be it for now for positional stuff. I'll move it into place in November, then we'll tackle other things like that later on. I don't want to throw too many things at people at once.

Understood. At least in private leagues, in keeping with the "spirit" of the changes, we now have "ammunition" to propose a league rule barring such position changes.

Great start, particularly the catcher arm issue.

I also believe, as you can tell from my positional change posts, that there should be minimum arm/range levels for middle infielders and Center Fielders - but at least walking gets us closer to running.

Got to thinking about this. A couple of concerns:

1. A kid is a catcher with an F arm, C+ contact, A+ power from both sides of the plate. Does he get dumped from the draft pool? In real life that doesn't happen. He becomes a 1b or LF.

2. As for a "powerful" change, that's not just powerful, that's pretty overpowering. I just went through the starting catchers (or former starters) in Mike Schmidt League who are 28 or older (pretty much fully developed).

They averaged 31.7 improvements over the course of their careers, and that included a guy who was an A+ when he was drafted and got only 6 improvements in his entire career. Toss him out, and the average jumps to almost 35 improvements. If everybody starts out as a 40, that means the AVERAGE arm grade these guys are going to wind up with is B+, one point away from A-.

Granted, this is just one league, but I'm guessing that that data is going to hold up within a few points either way no matter how much we expand the sample.

I think a minimum arm rating is fine, but it has to factor in how well a guy hits before it dumps him from the draft; and I think that 40 as a cutoff is about 10-15 points too high.

Now that you've opened this Pandora's box, how about getting rid of the B+/D- and A/F, C overall pitchers that pollute the draft pool on a regular basis?

But if everyone started at C don't you think the number of improves would, naturally, decline ?

Or, even better, make it so that A/C+ or A+/C pitchers could be successful in SIM, thereby increasing the pool of useful pitchers and solving the constant complaints about the inability to develop pitching.

In answer to your earlier question, NO, I don't think that the number of improves will drop significantly. If every catcher in the draft pool is now going to be a C arm, I would expect that EVERY 17- or 18-year old catcher who gets full development (4-5 CP, regular PT in the majors) will wind up with a red-letter arm. I'm just not sure that's what we want to do.

What are your thoughts on dropping the A-/B+, B+/B+ hitting catcher out of the draft pool because he has a D arm?

Would those guys drop out of the pool or would ABE just raise their arm to C, or change their position to 1B ?

I'm not at all sure how the draft gets populated so I can't answer the question.

I would like to see them moved to 1B but I suspect that with the temperory changes to the code it'll be that they drop out entirely.

I think this pushes us a step closer to a "positionless' draft pool, which is a good thing.

It doesn't work quite like that. You have to think of it more from a god's perspective :) When a catcher is created, he is born with an arm no lower than 40. He is first given a position, throwing arm, and batting arm (L, R, or Switch). He is then given attributes.

Are you claiming to be God now Tyson. I thought that was my position.

Sorry Bart... but it is my position... and please do not take my name in vain... I will not like that.

Regarding my deputy god... Tyson... please look at eliminating D- and F skill levels... they would never make it to the minors much less stay in the minors for 10-15 years.

You know I heard you had a god complex there Nick. I think it was geoffrey13 who said something about it.

this news is outdamnstanding!!! Long has it been an issue of left throwing 2B, SS, and 3B, for that matter. Great step in the right direction. Also, a 40 at arm in the draft is another great step!! Nice work.

I too would love to see something done about this.
