Does this show up on their player cards because I don't think I've ever seen this award? What a great Idea.:o:spin::saint:;)

Gold Glove awards don't show up on player cards. I used a 130 games played minimum to determine winners. It is an award that most leagues keep track of on their own. Each league uses different factors to determine the winners. But it is nice to have gold glove winners just like the major leagues have each season.

I thought I would take up the Gold Glove awards in Gary's absence. This was one of the little things that he did that - in my opinion - make the league more fun. I tried to use the same rules he did, but in the case of LF for the AL and 3B for the NL, the best defensive player played just under 130 games.

Also, since I had to go back to last year's stats on the player cards, there is a chance I missed someone. If you think one of your players deserves a Gold Glove over my nominee, please let me know. Anyway...

Gold Glove winners for 1951 are:

AL

C - JT Robison - CLE
1B - Art Kangle - DET
2B - Steve Kalin - CHA
3B - Kelly Gruber - NYA
SS - Jim Walker - BOS
LF - BJ Surhoff - BAL
CF - Sam Mata - CLE
RF - Joe Carter - NYA
P - Chris Bly - CLE

NL

C - Freddy Allen - PIT (2)
1B - Goody Rosen - BRO
2B - Danny Engle -NYN
3B - Bobby Ford - CIN
SS - Kurt Jones - CHN
LF - Deke Mauler - PIT
CF - Templeton Peck - PHI
RF - Lee Roy Caffey - MIL

Lau vs Robison - I agree with you. These guys are pretty much even with the exception of range factor, which was driven up by Lau's put outs...which appear to have been driven up by Det's pitchers having more Ks than Cle's. Robison played 160 games; Lau caught 128. Very slight edge to Robison.

Eggering vs Gruber - I'll agree with you on this one as well. These guys were also pretty much even, although Eggering did have a better +/- and a higher fielding percent. Gruber gets the edge on games playes at 3B, though - 160 to 111. Very slight edge to Gruber.

Carter vs Hyman - I don't agree with you here. Sure, Hyman didn't make any errors, but he was -4 and Carter was +10. So Carter took away 10 hits and gave away 4 outs (+6 outs net) and Hyman gave away 10 hits without giving up any outs (-4 net). Neither played 130 games in RF (Carter 109;Hyman 125) so that's moot. I'm going to stick with Carter for now.

Bly - Agreed. I didn't include pitchers because they weren't included in 1950, but I will do so going forward.

So I've swapped out Robison & Gruber for Lau & Eggering and added Bly. I'll add an NL pitcher for '51 and pitchers for '50 when I get a chance (as I've clearly spent too much time on this for now! :))

I must weigh in with some comments. I was delighted to find young Zach Eggering included on the original list. He had an incredible year with the glove. He did not nail down the full-time role until July, however, so he accumulated fewer total chances than Gruber. I must agree with the nod to Gruber.

Keep your eyes on Eggering. Tewnty-one games into the new season, he already has a +5, a 3.73 RF, and a 1.000 FPCT in 69 total chances!

Too bad defensive skills don't mean as much as they should.
