And he wants 5 cps next year and 5 after.
Note, I still have 10 cps coming to me from another trade when I want from next season until 1975.

I don't know what your prospect situation is, or how you plan to use the CP if you keep them. Looks to me like you're giving up a #1 and the CP's for two years to develop that #1. That's a lot, but you're getting a pretty good pitcher in return, and he's got a couple of seasons left before he starts to decline.
I don't think it's an unreasonable offer at all. You just have to decide if you have the minor league depth to afford it.

Well the going rate for 2 years of CPs is a 1st round pick. So essentially he is getting 2 first round picks in value for a good pitcher that has 2 seasons in addition to the current one before decline.
I personally think that is a little steep and would counter with the pick and 1 season of CPs.

Am I missing something here ?
I fail to see how a pitcher of Hopkins level is worth even one 1st round pick, let alone a first rounder plus CPs.
Call me crazy, I've been called worse, but how does this significantly improve your team ?
I covet 1st rounders the way hookers covet clear heels and I'm not about to give one away, plus CPs, for a #4 starter.

I agree...that's too much for a #4 starter. However, nobody's talking about a #4 starter here.

Sorry, 11 seasons in the majors prior to this year - average 13-11, ERA 4.11, WHIP 1.35.
That screams #4 to me, maybe #3 on a team that's not competing. Which is exactly what he is, the #3 starter for a team that's not competing.
Where exactly does Hopkins help Cincinnati - wouldn't he be, at best, their #4 starter?

Well, since Cincinnati is fighting for a wild-card spot, I actually like this deal a lot. The pitcher could give your team the extra edge it needs to push into the playoffs, and the draft pick will only be in the 12-16 range.
The 10 CPs you're giving up may be steep, but since it looks like you got 10 more coming back anyway, it won't matter much. Go for it, and good luck on your playoff run...
