Impressions

I am brand new to this simulation. I've been at STATS for several years, but that game is going away.

So far - this is MUCH different, but there are some elements I like.

Curious about others' impressions so far.

Like - chance to carry a "franchise" through several season, owner is more akin to a GM as opposed to field manager, all ficticious players ELMINATES questions about coding, player evaluation, etc., interface - some good some confusing, but on the whole pretty solid, TRADES! Love the trading feature.

Don't like - so far - WAY too much offense and also early in the single season. I'm curious to see how the pitching performs over 100+ games, but so far there's way too much hitting. Truthfully - that's the biggest thing so far.

Two other elements I'm struggling to understand - park effects and fielding. The simulated games running on the Diamond Mind game engine all suffer from some serious flaws. (It's a great game engine, but it IS flawed.) The park effects and fielding impact seem extreme. In RL - are they factos? YES - absolutely. But the filding especially was way to heavily involved in the simulation. It was possible to take weak to poor pitching, and win 100 games with a gold glove defense. You'd have to see some teams to see how odd that looked. But here - how much influence does defense have? Some? None? Hard to tell so far.

At this point there are no park effects in SD.

Currently defense has a minimal impact. The game's creater is currently testing some changes to the code to make defense more relevant. We're expecting that to roll out in May (in time for the next season of single season/dynasty leagues). In terms of offense, each league is different. I find that end of the year stats to be well within the borders of what I'd expect.

www.stats.com, but the game no longer appears there.

http://www.stats.com/myteams.asp is behind my login. I'd happy to show it to you. Feel free to call me @ (number removed) during the business day. I can open a web meeting and pull up the application.

Thanks Chris, was it the same thing as ESPN Classic Fantasy Baseball?

I've removed your phone number - probably not a good idea to post it on the internet. But I appreciate the help!

I'll have to dig up my contact from Stats Inc and find out if they might be interested in doing something with Sim Dynasty.

Tyson,

It was the Diamond Mind game engine at both sites. They had two versions - a "Modern Era" and a "Classic Era." The Modern Era was the ESPN game - think slow ptich softball, and you get it. The Classic Era game was - in my opinion anyway - the "gold" standard for those sorts of simulations. (There were many problems, but the core player coding was generally very good, and the game "felt" like real baseball. The things that work for winning teams in RL - generally worked in the game. The ME version, on the other hand, was so heavily slanted to walks and HR's, and park effects, players played in bandbox parks, stocked up on sluggers and banged away. In RL - that doesn't work. But in ME/ESPN - its the ONLY way to do well.)

I THINK STATS sold off its entire business. But it's still probably worth a phone call.

Good Luck!

Chris

Oh, Chris, the things you are going to experience here. It will be fun, "fun" and interesting.

Man, I loved me that Diamond Mind game in my day. Used to be Pursue the Pennant, yes? My big brother and I played so many seasons ...

Thanks for the info - I removed a few external references, we do that to help our google page ranks and things like that.

I've heard of Diamond Mind Baseball before, and I had the opportunity to get involved a couple years ago. I should have just to see how it was because the guy that was talking it up showed me a couple of classic simulations; I have to say I was impressed, but it was too little too late for me since I had just gotten involved with another game that shall remain anonymous.
