Expansion Draft

June 24, 2002 at 12:52PM View BBCode

I'm going to run an expansion draft for the beta league. Let me know if you would like to participate. Basically if you are in, I'm going to dismantle your team and then put the players in a pool from which all teams that volunteer will then draft from. I need some help testing my Expansion Draft module.

I suggest you dismantle the three ghost teams, too... that'll give you more expansion draft players...

Oh, and as much as I love my team, go ahead and make the Gearheads part of the expansion draft. That's what beta teams are for...

By the way, with the incoming team owners be able to change their team names?

You can dismantle the Chicago Gangsters. I've been getting death threats from some of the players that I took out when I took over.... I've been afraid to go into the clubhouse lately. :)

I'll use the ghost teams, thanks. That should give us 5-6 teams which would be somewhat realistic.

Once I finish the code this week, I'll run the expansion draft. I have to think about order of operations as well. I think it will be Expansion Draft, run off season, then amateur draft. The off season sets a guys stat lines for the following year, so that would put his stat lines with the appropriate team. But there would be a chance you could draft someone who is about to retire.

Okay, I have a tentative working version of the Expansion draft ready to go. If you are participating in the draft, go to the new link on the left navigation called Expansion Draft.

I'll run the draft tomorrow afternoon.

I just ran the expansion draft, you can check out the results.

Note that the team columns don't match the teams. I'm working on this right now.

I ran it again. Assuming nobody changed their preferences in the last 20 minutes, the results should be the same. I fixed the bug on the display page.

I'll run the offseason and amateur draft tomorrow.

It went well for me... I got back all my key players from the old Gearheads, plus some new blood. I'm ready to roll!

Hey, I have an idea.... Let's say there are 16 owners in a league. 3 teams change hands at the end of the season. I'm one of the remaining 13 owners, but I had an absolute dog of a team, so I'd actually be interested in the expnsion draft as well. What do you think of giving existing team owners the opportunity to participate in the draft? It'd give some hope to those who, through bad drafting strategy and/or inept trades, had teams so bad that a handful of rookies won't fix...

I think the Dodgers of the Willie Mays league could be the first to sign up for this option! :)

I had thought about that option as well. I don't have any objections to it, and can easily make it happen.

Would any other owners object?

I wouldn't.

Except of course in the case of the Dodgers in the WM league... I liked the easy wins. :P

i wouldnt object, but i think there should be a limit on how often an owner puts his team up for adoption. a team could go from bad to awesome in one draft and then the people who have been trading and drafting to make a good team over time would get screwed.

This is only likely if the best teams from the previous season went into the draft as well. There's not going to be an influx of new talent; the amateur draft is basically equivalent to a bunch of random trades. The talent level on each team in the amateur draft should be an average of the talent going into the draft, so I don't see the amateur draft making superstars out of anyone.

I think it is pretty unlikely that you would get an "Awesome" team. Everyone should be fairly equal in the draft and there shouldn't be that many superstars available anyway.

One caveat to this. If the league only loses 1 team, there won't be an expansion draft.

my mistake, i dont really know what i was thinking when i posted that. i think i was confusing the first draft and the expansion draft. but i was still thinking of the expansion draft. either way i wasnt thinking clearly so ignore that last post please!

i do know what i was thinking now, i thought guys were being created from scratch for this draft. almost the same as an inaugural draft. i was confused, but i see how it works now:)

I have no objections, although I second the notion that owners should have a limit to how many times they can participate - I think you get 1 mulligan and then you have to live with your results.
