Hattiesburg's Local Music Scene

January 31, 2007 at 06:02AM View BBCode

I figure it's good for a laugh. Luckily for all of us, they've all got a myspace page where their musical efforts can be witnessed by the world over, whether or not they are any good or not.

No, this is not a promotion of any friends of mine, or whatever you'd like to think. I know a few of the guys in these bands, and unfortunately I don't have the heart to tell them... "uh, no."

Exhibit A: [url=www.myspace.com/kingmonotreme]Platypus Rex[/url]

If the "we try too hard" label could be put on anyone in town here, these guys would be it. Somehow, they've become the most established local band and can get a gig just by showing up. Last thing this world needs is another 3 Doors Down...

The first "Byron" is the dude I know... worked with him way back whenplays a mean poker game.

Exhibit B: [url=http://www.myspace.com/thomasjacksonorchestra]Thomas Jackson[/url]

I ended up adding this guy myself because I thought it was the running back for the Eagles that went to high school with me. I'm a dumbass... Ended up meeting him down at the Thirsty Hippo (named for its primary draw of female clientelle, obviously) and despite his love for the Yankees, he's all right. I'm not ashamed to say his coffee house blues appeal to me in some gay sort of way.

I've got plenty of others... More to come.

Pick your poison - loud, tuneless and stupid, or the most boring music in the universe.

I'm gonna keep this going JUST for you, mate.

Chance Fisher's slogan should be, "At least we're not Platypus Rex."

hahaha

Ahh, the bassist, Andrew Mire... Serving at the Barrel, playing the "In My Pants" game during the shift. (It's not THAT gay of a game. No physical contact involved.)

If Phish and They Might Be Giants lined up at opposite sides of a large room, and then ran at each other as fast as they could, all members of each band smashing into each other so that their molecules fused together into one large pile of goo, such that it retained all of the sensibilities of both bands without even a sliver of the already small modicum of talent that both possessed, and then Pavement came along and took a shit on the pile of goo, you'd have something resembling Chance Fisher.

A guy that frequents the house here, at least by the swingers clique we've formed here in town. Justin B.

[url=www.myspace.com/sneezeinreverse]Concept[/url]

I like it. The concept of "less is more," that is. Now if I could get that guy to write some good music and some banaca, he might have something.

Kobayashi Maru - "At least we don't have the geekiest name in the history of the world. We do? Oh. Never mind then."

I can do this all night.

Okay, Sneeze in Reverse is head and shoulders the best of the bunch, because they are so godawful that there is no possible way that they aren't in on the joke. So the fact that they have enough of a sense of humor to make music that bad is proof that they don't need anyone's approval, and therefore are truly awesome and what rock and roll is all about.

That's what I was aiming for, but even I know you have a beddy-bye time, so I'll continue maybe until I get tired. hehe

[url=www.myspace.com/stalefashion]Simpler Times[/url]

"I've got my gun, what's so funny now?" -- the thoughts of every Columbine emulator and Luke Woodham wannabe put into tune. Justin plays bass for this band, too... I don't give it a thumbs down, believe it or not. I've been getting high and bobbing my head to this for a good hour or so.

I would actually deem Stale Fashion "not terrible" but I'm pretty sure that the lo-fi recording is hiding some really terrible musicianship - not punk terrible, where that's kind of the point, but "13 year old with his first guitar attempting to pluck out the intro to Stairway and wondering if Mel Bay prints a book that teaches you to play "Back in Black"" terrible. So I'll reserve judgment. But, knee-jerk reaction - not terrible. But still not as awesome as Sneeze in Reverse.

You're knockin' me dead! I might have to give up if I didn't have so many! :lol:

[url=www.myspace.com/thatyellowbastardmusic]But it's obvious I'm not really trying at this point.[/url]

They's done gone and let the Tourette's patients start a band, massah!

The Furies Cry Blood obviously have a little brother relationship to Sneeze in Reverse - they knew they could never be as good or as funny, so they went the opposite route and decided to be completely sincere. Sort of like when you have an older kid who's an A-student and his younger brother decides to become a goth just to stake his own territory. Plus he's retarded, which is also a way to be different from his older brother.

Pass. On that note, I'm going to bed. That Yellow Bastard broke my will to snark, and for that they shall one day pay. Although they're probably schizophrenic, so maybe that's not such a good idea on my part.

Oh no... Dear God... I remember these guys now. I hated them when I saw them the first time, and now that I remember them, I'm debating throwing this half-broken chair across the room.

Ok, yeah, I'll leave you on the griffenz... The ever-edgy "z-for-s" substitution may just be a bit much. I hope everyone else takes the chance (fisher) to weigh in on these jewels.

Jesus Lou, you know these people? I'm with Furious, this is all shit. By far the worst one is indeed that last one, the Griffenz. How the hell does a band like Griffenz happen? They're what happen when Insane Clown Posse decide to 'dumb it down' to get more of the retard with a fisher price record player base. They're what happen when the Bloodhound Gang rape a class of 2nd graders and they all grow up to from a band seeking revenge.

God dammit, God DAMMIT all, you ruined my morning and you will pay...

This girl was found wandering the streets after attending the latest Griffenz show. Broken and shamed, she will never recover from the anguish of that dark night...
