Do you fans like great pitching? If so you should have been at this game.;).
Clay West, Baltimores great 13 game winner was looking for 14 and he went 9 innings of 5 hit, 1 run baseball, walking only one while fanning five!
Charlie Martin and the great closer Art Reilly were even sharper and they pitched two innings of no run, no hit baseball, walking one man. Martin got the win to go 4-4, while Reilly garnered his 2oth save.
Baltimore pitchers were sharper than razors and they had to be as the young Spiders with 7 game winning streak at stake were also breathing the clean air of being out of the cellar for the first time in eons.;).
Hard luck Spiders pitcher Steve Gromick, without a doubt the best 6-11 pitcher in the AL went 7.1 innings of great baseball scattering 7 hits and allowing just a single run while walking only one and fanning three. HankMyatt pitched a scoreless third of an inning but young lefty Herb Score and veteran closer Art Houtteman were hurt by wildness, as Score actually uncorked 3 wild pitches contributing to the winning runs.
the only scoring prior to the 11th inning came in the Baltimore 3rd. West flied out. Botz singled but Gromick got the tough Shuba to fly out. Joe Donahue then doubled but was held at third on a Smallwood single by a lasor like throw by Andy Kearney. Unfortunately for the Spides Botz to guide a "seeing eye" ground ball just under the glove of a diving Mikey Adams that went for a hit and scored Donahue. 1-0 Baltimore. Smith popped out to end the inning.
But in the Spiders 4th, that MAN again , Merl Combs, stroked a round Tripper that knotted the game at 1 apiece. He was greeted at home plate by the entire Spiders dugout!:D.
Gromick matched zeros with West until the 7th, scattering several hits but being tough when it counted. In the Charms 8th after two were retired Joe Donahue doubled which brought Hank Myatt to relieve for the Spiders.Hank retired Smallwood to end the threat. Still 1-1.
Coming on in the Baltimore 9th closer Art Houtteman gave up a 1 out walk to Gillign, but got Leflore to ground into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. still 1-1.
in the 10th Baltimore threatens again as Kid Abbot walked, but West bunted too hard into a double play. After a single by Botz, Shuba flied out to end the inning,
In th home half of the 10th the Spiders had a chance to end it. Veteran Chuck ckee and rookie Ron Wear singled and with two aboard and nobody out, Charlie Martin was summoned from the Baltimore pen. He got Mike Adams to hit into a 6-4-3 double play and with the winning run on third, Hal Naragon grounded out to end the rally.
In the Charms 11th Joe Donahe lines out, but Smallwood doubles. This brings hard throwing lefty Herb Score to the hill for the Spiders. Itss a tense pressure stuation, and Score wild pitches the runner ahead. The ever dangerous George Smith held in check for most of this series, comes through witha line drive single scoring Smallwood.Score thenwalks Gilligan and this un-nerves him so he loosess another out of control pitch moving the runners along. He then wild pitches Smith home. his 3rd wild pitch of the inning. He walks Kid Abbot but gets pinch hitter Hruley to end the inning but its 3-1 Baltimore.
In the Cleveland 11th, Art Reilly comes on to close and despite walking Henry Schilling gets Andy Kearney to ground into a force out and Joe Grilli and Dave Patterson to fly out to end the game and the streeeak 3-1. But it was a great game against a great team and thankfully Chicago loses to keep us out of the basement for another day.
