;). The baby bugs, behind the experienced right arm of Steve Gromick held off the hard hitting New Yorkers to win a slug-fest 12-7. The Spides wasted no time in jumping on crafty Gene Beardon (an old friend). In the 1st inning Andy Kearney worked Beardon for a free pass. The walk came on a wicked slider just off the inside corner that buckled the knees of Kearney but was called a ball by home plate umpire Luke McGook.;). The call seemed to un-nerve the usually composed Beardon as he glared in at the ump and then stepped off the mound to utter several "expletives deleted", and smash the pill into his glove several times. On his first offering to Henry Schilling the speedy Kearney stole 2nd. Beardon got Schilling to ground out but then walked Carl Hambelin on several close offerings.Kearney took advantage of Beardons pre-occupation with McGooks strike zone to steal 3rd.:P. Next up, the always dangerous Merl (Pearl) Combs lined a single past a diving Antonio Armstrong and Kearney trotted home.:o. Big Cliff Reilley then singled in Hamelin and Molitor walked to load the bases. Mike Adams lined a shot at Frank Murphy who threw home for the force. But with now 2 outs the shaken Beardon walked catcher Connie Martin to force in another run. With the bags still juiced Gromick lined out to end the inning. 3-0.Nothing across fore EDPS in the 2nd, but the Spiders struck again in the 2nd. Kearney singled and after Beardon got the next two outs, the "Pearl"hit one into the cheap seats scoring Kearney ahead of him and sending Gene Beardon to an early shower. 5-0 Spiders.:D. Another old Spider Ray Narleski came on and got Reilley to fly out and end the inning. The New Yorkers dented the plate in the 3rd as Johnny Berardino ( JB is another Spider Alumnus) singled, was sacrificed to second by Narleski and after Armstrong fanned, Parson Barrios brought JB home with a base knock. No further scoring occured. 5-1 Cleve. The fiesty New Yorkers would'nt quit however and in the 4th Pate singles, an out, Charlie Crane singles, moving Pate to third. Pate scores on a 2 base error by Kearney and Crane rides home on a bloop hit by JB. It looked like a big inning for the New Yorkers but Stevie G. induced Narleski to ground into a 6-4-3 twin killing to end the frame. 5-3 Spiders. In the Cleveland 5th with two away Paul Molitor singles, Mike Adams is hit on the tush and catcher Connie Martin drills a single scoring Molitor with Adams moving to 3rd on the hit. Gromick aids his own cause by singling in Adams, and Andy kearney adds insult to injury by slamming a long round-tripper scoring Martin & Gromick ahead of him. The badly shaken Narleski then walks Schilling, gives up a hit to Hamelin and "Pearl" Combs doubles off the left field fence scoring Schilling & Hamelin. Reilley grounds out to stop the bleeding but its 12-3 Spides and the kids are loving it.:P. Its uneventful until the N.Y, 8th, Parson Barrios single but Terry Lord grounds into a 6-4-3 twin killing started by a brilliant pick by rookie 2nd sacker Mike Adams. But with two gone Gromick walks Pate and Steve Hickman drills a hanging breaking ball into the next county scoring Crane ahead of him. The veteran Gromick rights himself and gets Murphy to end the inning.:D. Its 12-5 Spiders. Nothing doing for either side and now its the 9th and its do or die for the New Yorkers. Berardino doubles off the wall but pinch hitter Baker lines out to short and A. Armstrong grounds out. But with 2 gone Gromick gets careless and grooves a waist high fastball over the heart of the plate that Parson Barrios jumps all over for a 2 run dinger and sends Stevie G. to the showers. Mike Cressand come on to pitch for the Spiders and after giving up a hit to Lord, gets Pate to fly out and end the game. Spiders 12 New York 7.:D. In his post game interview Mgr Luv Twobunt gave credit to Gromick for keeping Antonio Armstrong off the bases. (0-5). He said if you can keep Armstrong off the bases you have a chance at beating them, he is their table setter. He also had praise for young Andy Kearney and Merl ( Pearl) Combs. Since coming over to us from the Reds the kid is hitting .306 w/ 3 homers& 3 triples with 9 rbis. If the kid had played at the major league level all season he would be a RoY candidate. As for the "Pearl, at only 23 he is a rising star. In only 51 games played ,he is hitting .329 w/ 15 homers, 12 doubles and 2 triples with 41 rbis. Project that with the 37 days he spent on the DL and the guy would have MVP stats!;). I tel you fans, these kids are coming together. Just keep your eye on the aforementioned two young men and with Schilling, Hambelin, Molitor, Adams, Reilley, and Williams and Naragon behind the plate you are seeing some fun seasons ahead for your Spiders!:D.
