Mid-Season Evaluation

Milwaukee Meatheads
The pitching staff continues to dominate. They have 3 starters in the top 20, including Cy Young candidate Warren Spahn. As impressive as that is, it does compare to the bull pen. Milwaukee has the top 4 relief pitcher's in ERA, ff relief pitchers who have pitched more than 10 innings.

Now, hitting is another story completely. The lineup is filled with young, inconsistent hitters. They will need to come around in the second half if Milwaukee is to remain atop the NL.

The minor leagues have been a pleasant surprise. Jim Rice and Joe Charleton have been improving nicely. Charleton will most likely be ready to make a contribution to the team next season or the season after. They will likely show patience with Rice and let him mature in the minors. Richards is a bit of a mystery. He has shown very little in the way of improvement even though the coaching staff has spent alot of time trying to get him control of his pitches. The good news is he's only 17 years old and has plenty of time before the big club will need him. Oswaldo Conlan is another 17 year old hurler who will be given plenty of time to mature in the minors.

Baltimore Charms.

As expected, an excellent offensive team, with the fearsome foursome of Botz, Shuba, Donahue and Miller leading a deep though not very balanced attack. We are the only team in the league without an attempted steal, preferring to let the long ball do the heavy lifting.

While our starting pitching was not predicted to be that good coming into the season, it has still managed to disappoint, with 4 of 5 starters registering ERA's north of 5. Much-heralded pitcher Moose Haas, brought over in a trade from Milwaukee, has not performed nearly as well as we would have liked, and he cost us a young 1st baseman with a bright future. What has saved the pitching staff has been the back of the bullpen, with closer Reilly and setup man Martin keeping us in lots of late and close games.

Down in the minors, heralded pitcher Mike Klein struggled in his debut in the majors and was sent back down. We still believe he has a bright future at the front of the rotation. And look out for outfielders Bud Swoboda and Sandy Martinez, who should be with the major league team before too long.

As the season heads into it's second half, Milwaukee continues to be a mystery. The team that couldn't seem to score runs has now scored 70 runs in their last 8 games. But, now the pitching staff has show themselves as vulnerable. This should be an interesting second half.
