Upstart Spiders defeat New York

:D In another great pitching matchup Don Mossi and All-Star Johnny Jones of New york hooked up in a dandy. Both Jones & Mossi went seven great innings before l eaving for pinch-hitters with the score 2-1 in favor of the Spiders. Both hurlers scattered eight hits, with Jonesy whiffing five and Mossi k'ing three New Yorkers.Offensively the brilliant young Antonio Armstrong had a perfect day going 4-4 w/an rbi and a score off Mossi's dazzling curves and steady Willard Levine was 3-4 and scored a run. For the Spiders Merl (The Pearl) Combs caught up with a Jones fast ball for a two run shot and (Mule) Garrido smacked a two run shot off reliever Eric Hermoso that proved to be the game winner, IN the ninth the New Yorkers staged one of their patented rallies and loaded the bases on closesr Art Houtteman but he bore down and fanned Hickman and Mitchell before Johnny Berardino ripped a BB that shortstop Combs made a brilliant leaping stab on to end the game. Although the heavy hitting and experienced New York club took sthe series the young and improving Spiders battled for every game.
