The BPFL 1962 Draft 1st Round Analysis
October 18, 2011 at 11:49PM View BBCode
OK I had so much fun doing last year's draft I thought I'd do it all over again.
#1 - San Diego - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171693]Anthony Bradley[/url] - K - **sigh**, oh well at last San Diego actually does need a kicker .
#2 - Calgary - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170770]Gilvani Mulitalo[/url] - DE - he'll be a great player, he's already in the top dozen DEs in the league and has no real weaknesses but.....
#3 - Colorado - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171730]Adam Carapello[/url] - QB - but this guy was still available. In a league where the top QBs are mostly in their late 20s the chance to grab a 22 year old who is already #7 in QB rankings would have been too much for me to ignore .
#4 - Hamilton - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171696]Steve Thomas[/url] - HB - Hamilton finished 3rd in rushing yards per game in 1961 but 10th in yards per carry so a tailback upgrade was in order. Thomas was my highest ranked HB but he's a work in progress.
#5 - Cleveland - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170768]C.F. Gant[/url] - DT - a very solid player, speed and agility need work as well as his ability to shed blockers but he should start from day one if activated.
#6 - Oakland - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170772]Loyal Mitchell[/url] - FS - the best DB in the draft goes to Oakland, great pass coverage, speed and execution, health and strength are concerns.
#7 - New Orleans - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170732]Ezra Pound[/url] - DE - my top rated DL, Pound has a good skill set and no real flaws Pound will start at LDE. I wanted a QB but Pound was too good to pass up.
#8 - Montreal - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170737]Ted Bohm[/url] - CB - my highest rated CB he has great physical skills and high potential, execution and attitude are minor concerns.
#9 - New York [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170746]Ed Howard[/url] - QB - I really thought this is who I'd get at #7, forgetting San Diego factor, Howard is a solid QB prospect with no real weaknesses, though that low aggression score may hinder him I'm really not sure to what degree.
#10 - Philadelphia - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170780]Earl Habib[/url] - QB - slightly higher rated overall than Howard Habib has a lower execution score and a weaker arm. He's a great fit with Philly as they need a young QB.
#11 - Miami - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171721]David Douglas[/url] - C - this pick is a bit of a mystery to me, I had Douglas in the 3rd round and had two other centers ranked ahead of him. Douglas is a very strong player with good blocking skills but his execution, potential and attitude are all red flags.
#12 - Anaheim - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171683]John Shedd[/url] - G - my highest rated guard, and 2nd highest OL, Shedd has a nice skill set and no glaring weaknesses .
#13 - Los Angeles - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170758]Owen Hall[/url] - FB - the highest rated FB in the draft, and 4-6 in BOVR, Hall is red lettered in potential, attitude, speed, strength and both blocking skills. An expensive FB but cap space isn't an issue yet.
#14 - Chicago - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171739]Johnny Skladany[/url] - C - my highest ranked OL, Skladany doesn't dazzle but has a solid overall package and represents good value here.
#15 - Birmingham - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=171692]Ron Harvey[/url] - OLB - the highest rated linebacker in the draft Harvey is very young and will need time to be an impact player, still good value I feel.
#16 - Arizona - [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=170745]Lou Jecha[/url] - DT - the #2 ranked DT in the draft Jecha has red letters in all the right areas, he should contribute right away and is solid value at this point.

I couldnt believe Howard (now Cafferelli) was there at #9 considering how little offensive talent was on the board. Very happy to get him there. He reminds me of Chad Pennington, he doesnt do any one thing great, but he does everything well and I love that 90 EXE. Clearly this is not Gamma, but with the coming changes to the passing game I think he´s going to be a good fit.
I liked Habib too and I loved Harvey, but that low health is tough for an LB

Thanks for the analysis! I would like to point out that Carapella had moved up to #5 among QBs by Week 1, when he led Colorado to a week 1 victory over Oakland. I'm using a conservative passing approach with him for now, but he's gonna be good.

Three QBs deemed first-round quality is a pretty good draft for the position. If we have that every season, within 6 years everyone will have a QB under 28 and we'll see the talent overinflate.
Most years there probably should only be 1 or 2 guys taken in R1.

#1 - San Diego - Anthony Bradley - K - **sigh**, oh well at last San Diego actually does need a kicker .
And fortunately he picked up 3 more in the draft just to be sure.

I was very happy to get Habib. His potential may be a bit limited (49) but he has a solid gold attitude (98) so he should maximize whatever improves he gets. I love high accuracy passers and he definitely is that (90) with a good exe (77). He is also very mobile and has a good health and stamina. The arm strength is concern but I can live with that. He's alread converted 2 of 3 ICs for arm strength so I'm hopeful.
I had the QBs ranked 1,2,3 because my starter was 30 and fading fast. I really had no choice so I'm thrilled that I got a good one and I didn't have to reach.

You can definitely tell who's not paying attention by the number of K's and P's on their team.
